So why is this state always broke?

I know this question has been brought up many times, but I've never really gotten a clear answer in just a sentence or two. The usual answer is "Because our politicians are corrupt". Well, that should apply in practically every state. If you ever look at the statistics of where Louisiana ranks in many of our natural resources and industry, it boggles the mind to know that we can never get ahead. Would love to know from those who are knowledgeable of our state finances.

Because our politicians are more corrupt than practically every state.

No other state would give students free college, and we have too many colleges. Our good students leave the state, money we invested in them. My thoughts on higher education and why its failing

The states buget is 30 billion. I think there is too much protected spending.

Most of our politicians are lawyers. We need massive tort reform to help fix our state, but our lawyers politicians will never vote for it.
Why do you think so many people hated Vitter? He was for fort reform.

We don't have a high percentage of tax paying workers.
And our politicians are corrupt.

Georgia has free tuition
Their state budget isnt that much more than Louisiana's.
Nobody else wastes money like this state. There is zero reason for our monstrously huge budget for our size.

OTher states give out free college tuition. It’s a lot of things that snowball. Yes too many colleges and universities is one along with high Medicare population ( higher thanks to gov honor code) too many state employees , and deals made by the long family that screws the state from receiving proper oil and gas royalties.

Louisiana is not broke. The state's revenue is almost $2 billion more than it was just 2 years ago.
The issue is the state is increasing spending faster than the increase in incoming revenue, mostly on medicaid expansion and other welfare benefits.

How about a few bullet points:
1) The state pays for many things that should be paid for by local governments
2) The state's system of taxation is completely broken
3) The state has too many dedicated sources of funding, which results in massive waste in some areas while other areas have massive underfunding
4) The state spreads things out too thin. Too many colleges, too many kids on TOPS, etc.

1. constitutionally protected agencies
2. capital outlay fund is used by the Gov. to secure campaign contributions/votes
3. 18 4-year universities serving 150,000 students
We don't have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem.

We had a surplus when Jindal got into office and when he left office the state budget was fricked.
This isn't the main reason, but giving "friends" tax cuts and spending a lot of unnecessary money on his travels didn't help things.
