word is out that NOLA, like portland or denver, is a good place to be homeless.
I can see the benefits. Drinking on the street is legal, tons of visitors carrying cash, it smells like piss already so going to bathroom isn't an issue, and the cops have biggest fish to fry.
Plus, outside of the summer the weather is managable.

New Orleans is quickly reverting back to the shithole it used to be pre-Katrina. This is what happens when you let Democrats run cities.

Outside of BINGO, I doubt a shelter will effectively provide AA classes, job finding classes, etc. The bums will still be pestering tourists for their money because its a good life to get hammered and make a few hundred dollars a day.

Further indebting ourselves by trying to find "solutions" to the problem that only seem to make the problem worse (i.e., increasing the numbers of these people) seems to be doing wonders.

Agreed; the idea that we're going to pay to house a permanent population of non-working bums doesn't seem like responsible use of tax dollars when the city is so cash-strapped.

The reality is, there is nowhere you can put this where it won't be "near" some school. It's just the way New Orleans is just laid out. This program has the potential to be 1000x better than the status quo.

Because this will contain them in one spot, behind closed doors, instead of sleeping on the literal sidewalk all over the CBD? Seems like an improvement to me.

that would be my #1 concern about this if i were a local
people flock to the cities that will have them. the reason why san fransisco has such a problem is because of programs just like this. i mean i don't think you should go First Blood on 'em, but creating the incentive for more to come seems like it will do just that

How many will be able to sleep here? Doesn't seem to me that the numbers of these people is exactly static.

Talking out of my arse but I doubt homeless people are flocking to NO because we have a sweet shelter. They come to NO because we have warm weather, freely available drugs & liquor, plenty of tourists to shake down for handouts, and a police force with better things to worry about.
And, second, I don't really care if this increases homeless numbers in the abstract. I'd rather 1,000 of them in a shelter than 500 of them wandering around.
