It will be interesting to see how much of the area this affects. Right now, everything between Jackson and the expressway on the river side of Simon Boliver, include O.C. Haley, is doing really well and safe, at least in the context of New Orleans. But most of the areas on lake side of Simon Boliver in Central City are still very unsafe. I know there is a lot of new (most less than 5 years old) mixed income housing in that area with more coming online soon, I wonder if this might affect those properties.

Had an aunt that was homeless in Nola back in the 70's. It was her choice to be there and I think that is the same with with most now days as well. Screw this. Pissing away money.

Though I distrust any New Orleans politician when they start spending money, anything to remove the homeless from the CBD and warehouse district is a step in the right direction.

There's one bum who has been hanging out by the Rouses on Baronne for a couple of years harassing customers; they have tried to get the city to do something but it's apparently impossible.

If you have lots of programs for homeless people, you'll attract a lot of homeless people to your city. Our downtown is littered with them during the day.
I will say they are more a nuisance than hey are criminal. Their crimes are more or less aggravations. It's the 20 something year old heroin addicts that are causing most of the crime.

To some degree this is really about accessing downtown between St. Charles Ave and Oretha Castle Haley. With the redevelopment of the Warehouse District, the emergence of the South Market District, and new investments in Central City it should be really cool to walk or bike from uptown or lower Central City to the CBD and vice versa. But its not because of all the bums under the expressway. If you can clean up those areas you will ensure continues investments in the CBD and Central City, at least below Simon Boliver.

No doubt about that but instead of coddling them, why don't we start arresting for vagrancy/dope possession or sending them the hell out of town? Why encourage a permanent population of miscreants?

No, I'd rather they lock these people up and give them the care they need while getting them the hell off the street and away from people they could potentially harm. Sobriety isn't the issue. Their mental illness is.
Why allow them to come and go freely so they can get drunk and act bat shite crazy? Institutionalize them for the safety of all involved.

I'd rather them get treatment and sobriety than a place to sleep it off, thus enabling them.
