I don't get the hysteria. I've said this already but I care as much about Joel Osteen now as I did before he locked his church for whatever reason. If he wants to keep people out of his church then so be it. If he wants to preach prosperity gospel then so be it.

God help you if you're looking to Joel Osteen for saving, before or after a disaster.

So, the church was "initially too" damaged to take flood victims. People lash out on Twitter. Now, all of a sudden it isn't "too damaged" to take in the flood victims? In that short span of time, how did the damage and flooding of the church clear up?

It's a miracle I tell ya!

Osteen probably didn't want to deal with any potential liability issues.

Though this story has spread like wildfire in both social and mainstream media over the past few days, it has become obvious that Osteen's Lakewood Church was in fact too flood-damaged to initially take in flood victims.

In his original tweet, he simply said he and wife are praying for Houston, OUT! If he would have said the church is flooded, and streets are inaccessible right now. We will open the church to those needing assistance as soon as we can, and in the meantime we are collecting goods for those in need et. etc. Since he did not do that, his original tweet likely demonstrated his true feelings, which were time to GTFO, see you later Houston and oh yeah, thanks for all that tax free cash.

There wasn't a story in the first place. The church was closed, it's not like they kicked a bunch of people out into the flood or turned away lines of people at the door to my knowledge.

They could have done this story for 1000 churches in Houston that probably closed up so staff could handle their business and families, but trashing some 500 member church won't get clicks.

Osteen is a total douche, but this was manufactured outrage from the onset.

If they legit had flooding in the building that had to be dealt with, than whatever about the social media outrage. I can't click the link, but this sounds like people of his church taking offense to the backlash, not Joel being political about the whole thing.

Even though I hate his message, I'd like to think h e's not a "total" dick and wouldn't turn his back to the needy in his area. I'll give him and the church the benefit of the doubt.

It is a tad bit sketchy that they took a while to say they were flooded. Earlier they mentioned it was a logistics issue, and that they never closed their doors. You'd think that kind of interior flooding would have closed the church, but who knows.

This.

Just doesn't make sense. Why not just say from the start it was flooded?

I don't want to call the guy a liar, but he wouldn't have caught near the flack if that was the truth from the start.

People didn't lash out, ignorant shite-posting trolls and the low-educated lashed out because someone posted something without proper context.

He was on Good Morning America this morning. George Stephanopolous all but called him out. People obviously lashed out.

That said, how did the damaged church clear itself up in 12-24 hours time?

basically if you're a good Christian, God is going to reward you with money, the right job, no problems in your life..........

What's wrong with believing that God will reward you with a good job and money? You work hard and do the right thing, how is it that good things should not happen to you?

Now, as far as no problems in your life....seriously??? Who would believe in that? We all have problems.

I heard somebody that worked for the church say it was because all the streets were flooded and there was no access. He didn't mention that they flooded. I don't know what to believe.

I live right by there. We only had streets flood sunday morning. Their garage almost certainly was flooded since it is underground. They easily could have gotten trucks to the church but parking underground wouldn't have worked

Likely wary of the violence, rape, and other issues at the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina, Houston officials have avoided using massive complexes like Lakewood to house victims. Simply put, as the Superdome demonstrated, it is simply too difficult to manage that many people in one place.

As I mentioned earlier, Osteen probably didn't want to deal with liability issues.

Because what you end up with is people, when going through rough times, believing it's because they aren't faithful enough, or not praying enough. Someone who would believe that their child is dying because they weren't a good enough Christian is horse shite and the exact opposite of the message of the Gospel. If you're only a believer because you're hoping to get a better paying job, there's really no genuine love of Jesus. Kind of like a trophy wife.

Because there is nothing in scripture, nor in Traditional teaching, that says anything of the sort. It's feel-good charlatanism. I think it's a reasonable thing to believe, but not on a religious basis.

In his interview this morning he seemed to say that those pictures of the flooding inside the church were from a prior flood. In fact he said (paraphrasing even though in quotation marks) that the "only reason it didn't flood this time was because of their flood gates".

ETA: He said that it was within one foot of coming in to the church but that the whole bottom floor flooded in 2001 (possibly when those pictures were taken?).

In classical Christian theology, this was heresy. You worship God because you love Him. It is your job to do for Him, not the other way around.

Don't know if you saw his interview this morning but he had the biggest shite eating grin on his face the whole time he was attempting to explain his church's situation. It was sickening to watch.

I'm pretty sure that's just his face

It's a national story that they deliberately weren't opening the church, not just bored housewives on Facebook. Usually a story you would want to get ahead of if you are in charge of such an organization

Well, this isn't quite right either

We do in response to our love for Him, not because we're trying to gain said love. We're not trying to earn anything because there's nothing to earn. It's a free gift. The Gospel.
