Depends on how old you are and lifestyle you want to lead. I am 50 and have no desire to go crazy so 1 to 2 mil after taxes would FU money for me.

If that’s FU money, then i’ve got it, have had it in the past and have used it for the exact purpose you describe.. However, I don’t think what you’ve described is in any way FU money, since i may have $$ to live on for 6 mos to a year, and yeah i can tell my boss to **** himself- but eventually, sooner than later, i’ll need to find another job.

Real FU money is the ability to not have to do anything you don’t want to do, work wise.. we can quibble over what amount that might be, based on your lifestyle , but in general if you’re truly financially independent then you have FU money .. Me personally, i doubt i’ll ever have FU money; my goal is simply to get to the point in life where i work because I WANT to, not because I HAVE to.

It all depends on where you live and lifestyle.

Small town, rural America? Anything in the eight figs is going to be pretty sweet. West/East Coast cities? Yeah, it’s going to take more along the 100+ range.

And IMO FU money is being able to do (relatively) what you want when you want. Eat, drink, golf, travel, run naked in your front yard, it doesn’t matter. That’s FU money.

Aunt Becky and her husband are supposed to be worth $100 million. This is apparently not FU money.

We dont know yet. FU money doesnt stop you from being accused. It stops you from having to deal with the consequences.

Based on Hollywood's history of not putting the rich and famous in jail for worse crimes, I am guessing Aunt Becky will be back doing whatever she wants to soon.

This is just a minor nuisance for her.

Assuming after taxes, $5M is basically frick you money. That’s $125k per year over 40 years.

If you have a boss then you don’t have FU money

I don’t think it is having enough money to do whatever you want to do… I think it is having enough money to not do anything you don’t want to do.

If I got a deposit every year for $125k for the next 40 years, there is nothing I can’t do financially. It’s not Jay-Z money, but it’s never have to work again money.

$100,000,000? Holy shite some of you people are crazy. Yes $100,000,000 will be frick you money, but if someone makes $350,000 a year (think financial planner, company owner, developer) and manage it properly, in less than 10 years they will have enough wealth built up to have frick you money

I interpret FU money differently. It’s not money that you live off forever. It’s a stock pile of savings that allows you to tell a boss ‘FU’ and walk off the job because you got a stash to live off until you find another job.

This is getting close to the correct definition, but it does mean that you can support yourself indefinitely and don't "need" a rely on job. That's why you don't have to kowtow to "the man" and can tell him FU (or FO) without the worry of being fired.

If I got $125k tax free for 40 years I’d either be set for life or I’d be dead in a gutter. No in between. $115k after taxes is like making $200k a year. That’s a lot of cheddar. That’s $340 a day. Yeah I could live exceptionally comfortably off that

depending on how many exemptions you claim and if your state has an income tax, it's not too far off
