I get this becomes more expensive for the customer, but if something were to happen resulting in a loss of the home, wouldn't you want the covered value to be the most up to date with today's value?

You aren’t gonna upgrade your house and not tell the insurance company.

You do know market value and the cost to replace are two completely different thing right?
Yes. That’s my point. If my house is worth 600k and I want to insure it for 300k that’s up to me. Lower premium higher risk. Do you understand that concept?

I just switched carriers because my old carrier had sent an inspector a few weeks before my renewal and they raised my replacement value to about 30% higher than what it would be and my interior contents to $500K. I don't have $500K worth of stuff inside my house.
It is generally based off a percentage of your coverage A. 50% of coverage A is usually the default but some larger caprive carriers default to 70%
almost no one has 50% of their coverage A in contents amount, the amount of things you would have to have to reach a half a million in contents in absurd unless you have specialty collection, jewelery, antiques in which case those items should have their own policies. Problem is, some carries will tell you iv you go below a certain percentage of your coverage A on contents, they will no longer cover your contents at replacement value and switch it to ACV
The first thing everyone should look at when trying to lower coverage is their contents amount. Of the things you can change (aka not coverage A) deductibles and contents will generally have the biggest affect on your overall premium

If even insurance ghouls have this tech, who the hell else is doing stuff like this?
Doug, one of the homeowners in your neighborhood.

Then they were low on my contents vs what they told me my replacement value was, but as I said, I know they overshot my replacement value since I am a contractor.
My new carrier is closer to what my RV actually would be.

Anyone who can afford it and that will benefit from it.

Some companies are a little high but it’s not nearly unjustified as what you are imagining despite your profession

This may be better than what has caused a stir in California over the past couple years. They changed regulations that now allow insurance companies to use satellite imagery to assess properties. That has opened up a mess of problems.
