Lattice degeneration of left retina
round hole left eye

Apparently I need to see a specialist about surgery to correct this so it does not become a problem later.

Can anyone who experienced this offer advice, type of recovery, or should I just accept blindness?

Quitters never win, baw.

I know a lot about eyes, but not this particular problem. What I can tell you that - and this is a truism of course - there is no better time in history to have this problem. Let's just go back 30 years - while there was, obviously, greater understanding of the structure and mechanism of the eye, from a corrective standpoint, it might as well have been 1750 as far as treatment options, compared to the options they have today with transplants, lasers, artificial lenses, corneal repair, etc.

Good luck and prayers sent, baw.

I’m sorry :( I haven’t dealt with that, but I do have to be diligent about being checked for signs of an inherited cornea disease (parent ended up with corneal transplants in both eyes).

Did the doctor give you any idea on long term outlook? Is it likely to recur?

Really not a big deal. They'll shoot you with a laser a few times and you'll go on about your life

Plus side: you can imagine every chick is a 10 if you can’t see them well?

Yeah, but then you have to do the Ray Charles trick and measure the wrist. It's 2017, that's going to hurt.

Essentially just told me to see a specialist because it can lead to a detached retina and vision problems

This is thread is the exact reason I would never ask medical advice on the OT. The correct diagnosis is always AIDS.

I have lattice degeneration or thinning of the retina. I go to the retina doctor once a year for a check up. I get little spots or squiggly lines in my vision sometimes, other than that no big deal. She just tells me every year if I have a abnormal amount of spots or squiggly lines and light flash to call for an appointment A.S.A.P. that my retina could be tearing and would need to be repaired.

You’ll see the retina specialist, they’ll hold you down as (s)he zaps around the hole with a laser about 20 times. There will be something like a jewelers monocle pressed against your eye with some sort of gel.

It’ll start out bright and unpleasant leading into a constant dull/acute pain until they are finished

The assistant has to hold you forward or you’ll want to pull away.

You’ll literally see red for about ten minutes after the procedure and have a headache. Then...you drive home and pop some ibuprofen as needed.

Everything is fine the next day.

Edit: that is if you need to procedure.
