It's not a matter of being a competition though. You either want the vehicle for what the offer is, or you simply walk away. Some people take such pride in that process, almost like it's kind of a letdown once they actually get the vehicle because they can't haggle anymore. I certainly don't bow down to some slapdick car salesman, no matter how long he's been doing it. Either we agree on a price, or I walk. Period.

One thing I've learned about buying at any time is knowing what I will pay. I'm not going to out-negotiate a seasoned salesman. He does it every single day, whereas I do it once every 3-5 years. I won't win the negotiation, but I know what I'll pay

This is absolutely correct. I love hear the old baw on the job bragging about how fricked over a salesman or dealership. Every time one tells me this I tell them they are full of shite. These salesmen do this all day long everyday, you ain’t going to go in there and beat them at their game.

2020 Chevy Silverado LTZ TX edition 4x4 6.2L for a little under invoice (about $13000 off sticker.)

Currently looking at a 2020 LT 5.3 Texas edition. MSRP 48,805 and we are down to $35990. Rep suggested I wait for the new incentives to come out on the 1st. He is thinking GM will up the incentives.

This is my first venture from a four door cheap sedan and into the truck world. He has been awesome helping me understand the trim levels and packages and options.

Toyota is still thinking they can sell at msrp because of muh quality. Was considering 4Runner as well. Best price on a SR 5 Premium was over 38,500. Guy told me that if I only cared about price and not quality to go buy the Chevy. Fyi, the sr5 premium is a small upgrade from their base model.

not necessarily.

if they are pushing volume, they can discount the cars.

without the volume, they really can't discount. they need to maximize profit per unit.

Just purchased a new car for my daughter over weekend. They are not nearly as hungry as you would think. Deals to be made but you’ll have to work.
Dealer #1: factory and dealer discounts really good. Trade in evaluation horrible and wanted me to believe they were doing me a favor. Sales Mgr was complete idiot. Walked out.
Dealer #2: Didn’t have exact model on lot but wanted the business. Told him where I wanted to be, sent runner to get car from Dealer #1 with 10 mins of conversation. Above market for trade in with some additional dealer discounts on top of factory rebates. Walk out within an hour with my daughter smiling.

BTW - We were the only persons on either lot for the entire time.

Auto plants are shut down. The dealer floor plan pays for the cars sitting on the lot.

Your buddy is selling 21 cars, assuming he only sells new, that the manufacturer was already paid for. Ask him how many transports are showing up each day bringing inventory. I've seen one in the past month and the inventory at the local dealer is getting very thin for this time of year.

Yep.

And even if you get a rookie salesman the vast majority of dealers have the manager do the numbers anyway. And the manager isn't a rookie.

I’ve found when you drive 50 miles away from where you live....they do not want you to leave without buying a car.

Bought 9 cars in Baton Rouge in my lifetime. (50miles away) always save $3000 more than hometown dealer.
Bought 2 in one home town
Bought 3 in another home town

I went to look a5 a Jeep Wrangler and a 4Runner with one of my kids last week. The dealerships aren’t desperate enough IMO. By June there may be a real deal to be had.

Right. It’s not like a salesman will get duped into losing money. Maybe he makes a little off you or maybe not, but the dealership isn’t losing money on any sales. People stress about getting some great deal just so they confidently brag to their coworkers. It’s silly. Just find a car you like at a price you can live with.

Sounds like the truck my dad had, at about the same price, except his was a 2018. Very nice truck but I’d opt for the 6.2L. The 5.3 is perfectly adequate but not that fun.

This. I've seen family members spend hours and hours over the course of weeks negotiating a car purchase. My time is worth way more than the <1000 in savings I might get over the deal they give you for walking in the door ready to fire with a reasonable price.

tongue and cheek but it’s impossible for us to tell you. What would you do with the money you save the next 6 months? Invest, larger down payment, vacation? We don’t know you. Are you in danger of being laid off? About to have a baby? If you want a new car and car afford it, buy it. If the purchase will keep you up at night, don’t. If you would have asked anyone’s opinion on finances 6 months ago, they would be wrong today.

My same exact sentiment. I was just in an accident in which my vehicle was totaled. I was just few payments from finishing paying it off. After buying a new vehicle almost every 5 or 6 years for the past 18 years, I decided to take my insurance money and buy something used and pay for it entirely with cash. So I would no longer have a car payment. Even the specter of putting almost 30-40 did not phase me in my decision making process.

I now plan to start taking that money that was going into a car into paying off high interest credit card debt and savings for myself.

Some other factors to consider with the changing economy is how exposed is your position at work to layoffs. And how hard would it be to find new employment in your field. The hardest thing is for you to get laid off and have to deal with car payments, rent or mortgage payments and not having something to fall back on.

My car just went out of comission this past weekend. So I am officially in the market for a new car. Im not a big car person with a preference towards anything really, so my plan is to go in to dealership and try to sit in/test drive as many cars as I can. From there I can walk off knowing exactly what car I want. Then I'll shop around for that car and see what's the lowest ill be able to buy the car for.

Hopefully it works out and I dont sign on into a shitty deal, but we will see.

Never had a single mechanical issue, but the shitty paint has oxidized and the interior has lots of wear and tear. I expect to get fricked on a trade-in.

I used to have an '09 Civic and the service manager told me that ALL of the Civics get oxidized. They've known about the bad paint but have never done anything about it. If you drive a lot, you do see a lot of Civics with bad paint. My entire car was repainted (under warranty) one section at a time as the paint went bad.

You couldn't buy me a Civic. Service manager said that the Civics were the only cars that used whatever type paint it is. Cheaper car cheaper paint?

This has been my experience as well. Got 2 dealerships with same year cars but one has 20K more miles and they want $2k more than the one across the street. Cant get the more expensive one to even begin to negotiate.
