No ring on her finger, so I start chatting her up. We hit if off, lots of positive body language, yada yada.
Alright, so I’m assuming the kid who this thing is for is hers (otherwise why would she be there). How do you talk enough to “hit it off” and this not come up? I would think that would be one of the first things to naturally come up.
Now I’m just ashamed I spent this much time thinking about it.

I'm leaning heavily into this camp. I'd rather bone his ex. No, I'd rather have a loving, committed relationship with . . . no I can't do it, I wanna bone his ex many times.
I have a feeling you're going to regret it, but go ahead.

I asked about hitting on a 55 year old man yesterday so I say go for it.
Well I'm 54, work out 4-5 days a week, but I don't play tennis, . . .

Why should he care? He’s just hanging with you to learn guitar. It’s not like he thinks you’re a real friend

This isn't really a dilemma with a woman, this is an argument between you and your dick.

No pics, no solid advice

I guess the question is whether he comes to a conclusion on his own or has to beat it out of his dick.

Guess the dude isn't much of a friend if you're considering it. Even if you just hit it and quit it, it's gonna get back to him.

Go to one of my buddy's kid's HS graduation crawfish boil Saturday. I've known him casually for a few years, but last 6 months or so we've been hanging out more as he started playing guitar so I've been giving him some lessons and he's been coming to our weekly jam session.
OK, good start. I'm perhaps a bit less trusting of people and would be wary of some douchebag from my past wanting to hang out all of a sudden but OK.

Tall pretty blonde, straight up my type, is there. (I know the rules but no pics). No ring on her finger, so I start chatting her up. We hit if off, lots of positive body language, yada yada.
My interest is piqued. OK OK, good job.

Ask him later who she was, he says "My ex-wife". It hits like a record scratch and freeze frame in a movie: I realize then that I've heard her name before, just had not met her as she runs in a different social group.
OK, first of all we've already established that this is not a close and personal friend. "One of my buddy's" as you said. Not your friend, or good friend, or best friend. Not even someone you grew up with or served with. He's a guy you jam with every so often for six months. Congratulations, not a serious friendship to ruin here.

She seems to be relationship material.
Woah woah woah, pal. Pump the brakes. I know I said the guy isn't a close friend. I mean you didn't even know they were married and you weren't friends when they were, so plausible deniability. However, let's not jump to conclusions. In fact, you need to get that word out of your head.

Smart, funny, confident, makes a good living. Damn good looking.
Plenty of women out there with those qualities I certainly like. Doesn't make that relationship material.

Is this a Guy Code thing, do I talk to him before pursuing her, or what?
Bro, c'mon. At least be courteous. Tell a bro, bro.

Obviously. The OP didn’t even know his buddy had an ex.

No, I knew he had an ex, didn't know this was her or that she was fine

No I'm not married anymore. That's why I'm interested in her

Logic isn't your strong suit eh?
Maybe she’s wonderful and her ex is a wiener. .

I just texted HammerTime and called in a favor. It won't help you, but keep your head on a swivel. Send any children or pets to a different location.. Your welcome and RIP.

Maybe it’s just me but if I am starting to a chat with someone at a function like that I’d casually ask them how they know/are related to the host.
