Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat are what you make of it.
You friend/follow a bunch of vapid attention whores? Guess what your screen will be filled with.
On Instagram you can follow accounts that have awesome photography from all over the world or follow some random whore famous for her arse. It's all what you want.
Snapchat is perfect for sending quick pictures or messages to multiple people. Obviously they are great for nudes, but not everyone cares about that.

Can someone possibly explain the update better?
Currently when I open the app the screen that comes up is in camera mode with the options at the bottom. Icon for snaps directly sent to me on the left, picture button in the middle, and icon for the stories of friends on the right. All this is the same. I can still swipe one way for direct snaps or the other for stories instead of tapping the icon.
I see no difference.

All 3 apply an "algorithm" now. So instead of seeing anything in order, you see what they assume you want to see. I think fb still gives you a chronological order option. The other 2 don't anymore.
And it's made them pretty fricking terrible.

I think before the update, they had 4 separate screens: 1. list of friends you chatted with, 2. camera screen, 3. friend's stories (people you know and celebrities that you added), and 4. sponsored stories from celebrities and companies like MTV and Buzzfeed. Now, screens 1 and 3 are on the same screen, minus the celebrity accounts and screen 4 is more or less the same with the added celebrity stories. That's what I noticed. Also, I can't even pull up my friend's list either.
