No not at all, for the most part. I take road rules very seriously. Been smoking and fueling a long time. Don’t see my self changing. Some rules I have never followed and never will. Get out the left lane , I want to pass!!!

As a general rule, it's never a good idea to have a fire around gasoline

Damn, thanks man.

A lit cigarette is likely not hot enough to light gasoline, but it does get hotter when you take a drag. If someone accidentally spills out some gas as they are taking out the pump and they recently just took a drag and it fell out of their mouth, if the lit part fell in the right position and it is hot enough outside, it can light the gasoline.

I have personally tried to do this in high school on the levee while taking a drag and it did not work. shite, I've seen people try to do that to light grills in college that were soaked in lighter fluid and it did not work.

It just doesn't happen.

That being said, people shouldn't do it because I don't want to smell that shite.

Using a cell phone while pumping gas is just as much of a risk as smoking.

Static electricity and confined spaces (boat bilge, engine compartment ) and spark ignition is what causes problems with gasoline. I know I’m not going to set off something with a cigarette. A grinder or an armature/brush spark will cause problems. People that panic about cigarettes and gasoline don’t have much experience or really can’t think to a higher level.

There are also signs everywhere telling me to turn off my car. I read awhile back that this is an unnecessary precaution with modern cars, so I stopped. I still feel like I'm doing something shady when I leave it running, but I'm getting over it.
its not going to do anything if you leave your car running. I did that once and everyone freaked out. Like calm down people

In my teenage years I tried to light gas every way imaginable. Cigarettes wont catch gas no matter what you do. Has to be an open flame or spark... not a ember. You can literally put out a hot coal with a can of gas as long as there is not a open flame.

People that complain about smoking at pumps are miserable count looking for something to whine about. But...but...but "I don't wanna get cancer from your smoke as I breathe in the cancer causing substance that runs my car". fricking count

It's really not even an fire/explosion hazard. Cigarettes don't burn hot enough.

Mythbusters guys visited this topic.

This is wrong for two reasons.

1. They managed to light gasoline when puffing on the cig which makes it WAY hotter.

2. They myth they tested was a puddle of gasoline and throwing the cig into it like in the movies. The hazard when pumping gas is the fumes which, given the right air mixture, is a wholly different situation. Very possible to light fuel fumes with an open heat source.

It's not panicking, it's just using common sense.

Just a FYI, there are a lot of videos people have made about "working at gas stations". Evidently its a shitty job.

How often do you see someone smoking while pumping their gas? Do you say something and ask them to put it out or do you ignore it? Happened this weekend to me and when I ask him to put it out he got all stupid about it.

Any good stories ya'll have regarding this?

Yes I tell them something and get off the damn cell phone. If any lip I go inside and speak to employee to turn off the pump. If no relief I look for the red button and smash it. Don't like it tuff. Read the damn signs. Don't put me in danger for their stupidity and carelessness.

And people that leave their kids strapped into their seats while fueling. That's a bad idea.

You serious? There's a better chance that I forget to strap my kid back in after filling up and get into an accident than there is that my car blows up and I'm not able to get my kid out.

You really take your child out of their car seat every time you fill up?

Make sure you yell at all the women that get back in the car during cold weather. They and their static fingers are responsible for almost all gas station fires.

Gas used to be a lot more potent. Today I wouldn't really worry about it as gasoline fumes are pretty weak these days
