Think 200+ dollar waterford crystal cake plates, welcome bowls (wtf is that?), candle stick holders, crystal champagne flutes at 80/each, 500 dollar dyson vacuums, 450 dollar blenders, etc.

Some places will give you a certain percentage off on things you register for but do not get. So you can take the extra place settings and silverware back for store credit and get 15% off of that 500 dollar item. There were things my wife registered for before our wedding and birth of our first child just to be able to take extras back and exchange for.

A cash gift is okay but a money dance is trashy? Well this makes sense.

I'm not even saying a cash gift is "okay", just seems slightly less trashy then "here's a list of shite we want, please buy it for us."

People kept getting annoyed we didn't have our registry up fast enough. We were pretty meh about it but people wanted it up to see what to buy.

ETA: I'd rather cash or gift cards and buy a big green egg or the like, because I know nobody will buy me a $500+ grill.

when people put really expensive things on a registry it doesn't necessarily mean they expect someone to purchase it for them. most of the time you get a significant discount on anything left in your registry at the end so people put things they will end up buying themselves on there just to get the discount.

registered for some really outrageous shite

Going through registry process right now. Some people's strategy is to register for a bunch of high $ shite, then return it for store credit to spend on what they really want.

Meanwhile, I'm the tacky one for suggesting we put a Honeymoon fund on the registry.

The only "wrong" thing you can do at a wedding is a cash bar.

Northerners also don't do buffet receptions - usually seated dinners. Never been to a single one of those in the south.

Personally, I'd prefer cash but if I had been given cash there's no way I'd've ever bought nice China or silverware.

We didn't expect anyone to give us a gift, and honestly if they didn't that was fine. Still created a registry though, because some people will want to buy you gifts so you might as well get something you want.

This.

We have an Amazon registry and we have a ton of shite on there. Some stuff is really expensive, some nice but not outrageous, and some really cheap shite. Anyway, nothing is expected so it doesn't really matter.

The last 3 weddings I've been to in Texas, LA, and GA have all been sit down dinners.

I think it's more of a generational thing than a regional thing at this point. I think the current trend is to have a sit down dinner.

I prefer the sit down because it clearly delineates the time for eating and the time for getting drunk and dancing and shite like that.
