We should take a look at obesity in the black community versus other races and see if there just might be a correlation.

I was kinda being snarky... literally everything disproportionately affects minorities and women.

Do you know that joke about an asteroid hitting earth? Women and minorities hardest hit...

Not everyone who developed lung cancer had a history of smoking; not everyone who smoked developed lung cancer.

I guess there is no correlation between smoking and lung cancer.

Totally Man. Snoring hasn't been something noted and talked about for all of history.

There is a difference between snoring and stopping breathing when you sleep. People have lived since the dawn of time without sleeping machines. You don't need to be hooked up to a ventilator for snoring...unless you are somehow more comfortable sleeping with scuba gear on lol. I'd rather just snore.

Fatties on apnea machines actually stop breathing. Every single person I know that uses an apnea machine is obese except for one and that person takes too many pain pills. Some people use apnea machines due to taking opiate pain pills which drastically worsens the problem.

If I take an opiate within 6 hours of sleep I get apnea and wake up gasping for air. Thankfully I know its the opiates so I don't take any after 4pm.

Been in this business for over 26 years. I have fighter pilots on CPAP for OSA. One of the worst cases I've seen recently, is a guy who is in pretty good shape. All that being said, a dude that is middle aged or more, and overweight, 100% has sleep apnea.

If your snore, you probably have sleep apnea. If you routinely wake up with a headache, or you have a lot of fatigue in the afternoon, you probably have sleep apnea.

You may be correct. Untreated sleep apnea lowers metabolism. Easy to gain weight, real hard to lose it.

More people aware of it and are getting treated. Husbands and wives getting tired of the snoring at night and taking action. If anyone has been in a deer camp bunkhouse they know that this problem has been happening forever, but now that there is something that can be done about it more folks are taking action.

It’s not too hard to figure out…..

Is it harder on women and people of color?

Did not read the article.

How much more in taxes will solve it?

Yeah I recall reading about all the people getting fat because they snore back in the 1800s. The ability for people to blame the most ridiculous reasons is incredible.

I read the entire article. I have a background in science. There is no real science in this study/article. The study utilized a sensor placed under the mattress that measured the severity of the sleep apnea. That concept is extremely suspicious. The device was described in the article as FDA "cleared", NOT FDA "approved." There's a difference. "Cleared" means the device does't do an harm. "Approved" means there's sufficient science to recommend use of the device.

Honestly, I was expecting racism. Every problem is the result of racism, sexism, or climate change because those are problems that we can throw infinite money at and never have to show any results.

The real issue with sleep apnea is probably obesity.

That's not what you said. You said "there's no correlation between sleep apnea and obesity", which is 100% false, no matter what you meant to say.

quote:

The association between obstructive sleep apnea and obesity is very strong. Approximately 70% of individuals who have OSA are obese,1 and conversely 50% of obese individuals have OSA.

They are increasing because of sleep studies and the need of those in the industry to make mortgage payments. It is a scam. My father is 85 years old...his health care professionals all maintain that he will die if he does not use his C-Pap machine....yet, when he is in their care....he has been in either a hospital or a rehab facility 12 of the last 18 months, they will not let him use his C-Pap machine because it isn't necessary. This may be due to them being there and his oxygen levels being monitored except they ain't....of the 12 months he has been in either place he has been on oxygen monitoring about 10 days. People have been snoring forever and people have been dying forever. I would bet that the number of people who are told they need a sleep study who do not wind up being diagnosed with sleep apnea can be counted on one's fingers and toes.....
