For years, toxic and slightly radioactive red mud and dust from the waste ponds of a shuttered alumina plant have bothered neighborhoods near Gonzales.

But local leaders are working on a solution to the problem that the plant's owner hasn't yet solved despite past commitments to state regulators to fully finance the operation's complete closure.

The hundreds of acres of waste could be permanently capped with dirt under a plan developing between the state, Ascension Parish government and the site's owner. But officials warned that the plan for the LAlumina red mud ponds off La. 44 in Burnside could take time to flesh out and design properly.

LAlumina has a closure trust fund that could be tapped for at least some of the work, a company official said.

The "red dust" you speak of was actually Bauxite that was part of a military repository program in several areas.

Yes the Alumina plants generate red dust through the process and tailings but it is not the same material as the pre-processed Bauxite.

Like it or not, living in the modern world requires plants and processes. And people don't want to live 2 hrs from work, so the two have to meet somewhere.

The site should be cleaned up for sure but lets not crucify the industry that makes aluminum as we drink a beer from an aluminum can while we do it.

How do you pre-process a naturally occurring ore? I guess you could make it?

The ponds are red mud though, one of the byproducts of the Bayer process.

People have gotten soft. The mud and dust is only “slightly” radioactive.

Everything is radioactive. The dose makes the poison.

The piles on Sherwood were "pre-process" which is the ore in its "natural" state after being mined.

The red sludge, dust, and water are the remnants of the Aluminum production process.

It's waste, and it needs to be cleaned up or capped.

But it's not the waste piles fault some person decided to develop a subdivision next to it.

The article is clickbait. Without knowing the amount of radiation and its geographic spread no one can confidently comment on this. I can put a geiger counter up to any rock in your backyard and it will be “slightly radioactive”.

Of course people are going to start blaming every little ailment on the “radioactive ponds” next door. Just wait until Gordon gets involved.

I don’t feel bad for the idiots who bought a house next to a waste site.

Yes, but these plants have permits and federal/state regulations that have to abide by. When the Alumina plant went belly up once again, they failed to maintain the mud lakes per their permits. When that red dust leaves the sight, they are in violation.

That plant is an old piece of shite with morons left to “caretake.” No money, plan or effort was ever put forth to protect the surrounding community.

So people bought a house in a subdivision next to a toxic dump and now they’re complaining?

So says you, and while what you say may be true, or not, I suspect the facilities presence was known to the developers who built the subdivision.

Put down your beer can, turn in your aluminum F150, and throw away your macbook air, and then, I'll respect your pissing and moaning about industry.
