Is it really even possible to do something and it be genuinely altruistic?

I am leaning toward it not being possible.

Curious as to what others might think.

I can perform truly altruistic acts for others, but i am always suspicious of others who attempt the same with me. Explain that

Altruism is a dangerous farce.

Extremely rare. Everyone has an angle. Money, power, attention.

I'd say raising children, if done to the absolute best of one's ability, is altruistic.

Why would you think it’s not possible? Do you have children?

Die a hero. A lot of people carry that fantasy.

Its a great illustration and one I (fortunately) had not had to consider but I posit that you still, if only for a split second, get the gratification of knowing you did something for another.

A lot of people don't and do it anyway.

Of course. If you care about others, that should really not be a question.

If you have kids, that REALLY should not be a question

I have never been a father but I have tried to contemplate this as a possibility.

I'm so glad you have the ability to read the minds of everyone and determine which ones are noble.

The hero syndrome is a real thing.

A person does what they want to do. period

the question is, is that desire going to cause harm to self? If so - even though the person did what they wanted, the value of self was worth less to them than the value of others.

altruism isn't avoiding one's own desires, altruism is when one's own desires benefit others over self even to the point of harming one's self.

altruism is a matter of priority of desires and outcomes, not an absence of them

Not for nothing, but I'd estimate at least 70% of this board will have to look up the word "altruism" in order to provide a response..
