Good chapters will still do it in secret. Southern chapters dominate national fraternities, and frequently get away with whatever they want as long as they make some effort to hide it.

People can shite on you and you recognize that it isn't ill-spirited. They're just making you go through the process (sports teams, new in a job,etc.). They figure out if they like you and you can easily see whether they're doing it to truly make your life miserable or not.
But those who really do treat pledges like shite were remembered by us. A few turned out to be ok, but some you're never close with. You don't usually like everyone in your fraternity.

Is this not how they got back on campus in 2004? Direct active membership? Even put advertising in the reveille or tiger weekly about "congrats to our new members", right after formal rush.
