I remember. It really put a damper on the experience there for a while. I think as soon as you walked out of the building, the herp would vaporize though. Very unique strain, kept you coming back for more.

Fairgrounds Field was heaven for us young kids in the late 80s- early 90s.

Soft serve ice cream in the ball cap bowls
LSU vs Centenary annual game
Giants playing the Captains in exhibition games
Bat night
Playing football with kids you've never met before next to the side fence of right field.

Not going to read the whole thread, but if Murrell’s is gone, Shreveport really has nothing left. A legit national treasure. First place I ever tried "green goddess" salad dressing. Their biscuits and gravy were top notch.

Also Southern Maid donuts. They were what Krispy Kreme could only wish to be in their wildest dreams. Those 70's-90's white boxes with the green print showing a walking dog are still my gold standard of donuts.

Edit: Oh, and also where I saw Type O Negative and got to talk to the lead singer at a meet n' greet before the concert the night I tuned 21. RIP, Peter Steele.

Edit 2: I saw Piccadilly in Mall St Vincent mentioned - that and El Chico's were my pawpaw's favorite restaurants, and the last places I got to hang out with him before he passed. I should stay out of this thread, someone is cutting onions.

The decline started somewhere late in the 80s. Maybe mid 80s. Energy industry issues, gangs, etc. I remember going shopping with parents at Rubenstien's downtown Shreveport, but by the late 80s those businesses had waned.

Malls replaced the standalone stores, gangs replaced the oil industry people.

Man, I was there in line at the Hirsch when Pantera was supposed to play in (94?) hirsch actually placed chairs in mosh pit area & band said they wouldn’t play if they kept them. Fire marshal wouldn’t budge, so concert was canceled & a nice little riot ensued outside. SHV mounted patrol was there to tamp down crowd, it was nuts. I think it made it on MTV news at the time.

Two old-time celebrities who lived (retired) in Shreveport for a while in the 1970s...

Bandleader Jan Garber, who had a fairly jazzy 'hot' dance band in the 1920s. By the 1930s, his band went more in for mild, 'sweet' stylings. But in the early-1940s, when swing was the popular craze, he restructured his band again, to play more hot and swingy. After the war, he veered back to the sweet band style, akin to Guy Lombardo. Garber's band was successful for decades, made lots of records.

Silent movie actress Barbara Bedford. Made a big splash in "Last of the Mohicans' in 1920, and while never quite a front-rank star, she headlined slews of silent films in the 1920s. Like "Mockery" (1927), opposite Lon Chaney, which occasionally pops up on TCM. When talkies began, her career diminished, and she was mostly in small character parts. Sometimes can spot her playing Alfalfa's mother in the later, MGM-produced "Our Gang" shorts. Things like that.
