No proof of this. Some cataclysmic event occurred that changed the climate. It allowed man to migrate to new areas and hunt the mammoth but could the big event and climate change have more to do with the extinction rather than over hunting?

Not a wooly mammoth, it’s an African elephant with modified genes to make it hairy. No we should not do it.

That's not what I was talking about. I agree that we don't have proof on the reason for extinction of the mammoth. He was asking if the reason was still present. I'm asking if the presence of the reason should not make a difference. In the cases where man has caused an extinction for whatever reason, does it mean that even if possible, we should not bring back a species simply because man (the cause) is still present?

I heard it said that wooly mammoths haven't been extinct so long that they couldn't be brought back.
Dinosaurs, OTOH, have been extinct too long to do something with them. And that's a good thing.

I wonder about this sometimes. Couldn't we maintain the existence of most endangered species, like tigers, with genetic engineering?
