Should the monsters of society be publicly executed? Would it have any benefit?

In situations where there is no doubt in who committed a heinous crime, when there is clear video evidence of them destroying innocent lives, when no sane person could defend their actions, would you support a public and violent execution?
Someone like this school shooter
I listened to Dan Carlin’s latest Hardcore History podcast, Painfotainment, and it wasn’t all that long ago that western society at large publicly executed violent criminals.
Would bringing violent spectacles like this back do anything to deter?
Does violence beget more violence, or is violence deterred by the threat of terrible punishment?
With execution today being where the condemned is strapped down, the injection point sterilized, and then given a concoction of expensive drugs to ensure there isn’t pain an exercise in futility?
Their victims got no such mercy.
Should death be as brutal and bloody for the condemned as it was for those they murdered?
Should the executions of the coliseum come back?

As a Libertarian I am increasingly uncomfortable with allowing the government to execute citizens

Ehhh...Dan touched on a very interesting subject but the world was a much more violent place than it is now.

People were even more violent back in the day, and they had way more brutal means of executions than they do today. If anything, I think it will make them think they’re more a martyr if they go down in that manner. The guy who shot up the Aurora theatre particularly strikes me as the type of guy this would not remotely deter. These people are almost always willing to die for this.

no, I do not believe that public execution is appropriate.
Timothy McVeigh specifically requested that his execution be broadcast, and it was rejected. These people think they are martyrs and want their cause made publicly aware. The last thing we should do is put them in the public eye one more time.

Countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, North Korea and African dictatorships publicly execute people. I don't want our criminal justice system to emulate theirs.

Great question, OP. But the answer is probably not.
1) We're supposed to be "better than that."
2) I bet there'd be some deterrence, but you'd get more people killing themselves in the end (and we need answers for that stuff), some people are too crazy for it to matter, and some sickos would actually be enticed by it.
But I'm half on board.

The abandonment of public executions isn't what's caused a spike in crimes like this (there is no one real cause, but lots of ancillary ones that stream together to create the river of shite we have today). Those who need to see it the most will be the least likely ones to watch (at least after the "new" faded from it).
