re: Should the monsters of society be publicly executed? Would it have any benefit?

I'm not against it but I don't really have a desire to watch a lynching.

I am not a fan of increased public violence
I would be greatly in favor of a non-flexible pre determined sentencing policy with execution being applied for murder, rape, and selected other violent crimes. Would love to see sentencing similar to prices at McDonalds posted on the wall behind the judge. Once determined guilty the judge turns around and tallies up the cost.
It is a simple undeniable fact that when the death penalty is applied to violent criminals the violent criminal recidivism rate is DRASTICALLY lower.

I’d enjoy watching Jerry Sandusky being torn apart by dogs.

I would have liked to see the shooter executed on the spot where they caught him. Just a quick pop to the head. There is no need for him to continue living.

People never see the end result of what happens to the bad guy, they just kinda fade away. To a sane, rational person with a loving family that may seem like a terrible thing. Nobody wants to go away and lose their great life. If your life is shite, maybe going away and getting removed from your shite life doesn't seem so bad.
Imagine being an inner city kid in Chicago. Chances are, by 18 you know someone that's been killed or been sent away for murder. Or hell, you may even know someone that got away with murder. What deterrent is there to not commit murder? As a free person your life is full of drama and turmoil. You're hustling on the streets and constantly looking over your shoulder. Maybe with no place to live, no medical care, etc. Prison doesn't seem that different so likely isn't a deterrent. Now, if he had seen someone publicly executed and suffer it may change the thought process
School shooter types are different. Normally they think they can cause all this carnage, then eat a bullet and never have to face a victim or the consequences. If a person has no worries about the after life, then they have nothing to fear about doing this type of attack. These are the ones you want to take alive and study to find out how to prevent others from doing it. If they know they will be dismembered in town square I think chances of them committing suicide go up even more.

Part of the allure to these events is being immortalized in the media.
This wont help that.
What if a new law and punishment were established that say if you shoot more the 3 people your body, live or dead, will be put in the middle of town and your peepee hole and butthole will be filled with peanut butter and honey and left for the city to watch and enjoy what rodent/insects come an violate your peehole and butthole for some sweet treats. All while your head gets kicked around the town square in a morbid game of street soccer by family of victims.
I think only the craziest of the crazy wouldn't be affected by that if it was done once and aired on TV.
Basically desecrate their corpses so badly for extended period of time in the most fricked up ways possible including the genitalia.
That would work to deter some suicide committing pussies who do these things.

quote:It's possible. I would be interested if there was any data from back when they still had public executions, if there was any correlation between public executions and deterring criminals. I'm not saying I'm against it, but I do wonder if there is any real deterrent for some of these people. They're obviously not right mentally, and most of them know beforehand that their actions could very well lead to them being killed in the process, yet that doesn't deter them. Mainly because they are just sick individuals who don't give a frick. So, I would guess that the threat of a public execution of some sort would deter the truly sick ones who show no emotions and have no empathy towards others. It may work though towards someone who is contemplating something like a mass shooting, yet still have a little bit of emotion in them to actually think about the consequences of their actions. Although, I'm not sure that thought process would register with someone who is considering a mass murder.
Would bringing violent spectacles like this back do anything to deter?
quote:That's a tough question to answer. I think in many cases, violence does beget more violence. For instance, someone who grows up around a lot of violence is probably more susceptible to become violent themselves, because that's what they know. However, once again, I think the threat could be a deterrent for some of the ones teetering on the edge.
Does violence beget more violence, or is violence deterred by the threat of terrible punishment?
I'd be interested to see more data on these subjects. It's definitely an interesting topic to me.

Good post and question.
I'd wager that most criminals don't have the capacity to consider consequences when committing a crime.
I doubt this would deter any mass murderers. Hell, it might even be exactly what some of them want.

I am beginning to think that is why some of them do this. This asswipe stated he wanted to be a professional mass shooter.

Flay him alive and see if that still seems enticing.
