Should colleges require student covid testing before semester?

I don’t know of many schools that require student testing before opening. I think alabama and auburn do. Pretty sure georgia, Florida and Tennessee don’t. LSU doesn’t.
On the surface it sure sounds like a good idea if you want to weed out the positive cases before a semester starts.
I’m guessing those first few weeks will tell the tale of the tape.
If it were solely up to me, I’d mandate testing with only negative results allowed on campus. Housing would have to do temp tests on each person daily

Unless you intend to lock students and faculty down to the campus after, or to continuously retest, the effect of one front end test would be minimal. Can't hurt though.

This is how it's going to go:
1. Require all students to get tested, to appear that you are caring for the well being of the entire student body
2. Collect tuition
3. Move to online only classes once the school has gathered enough positive tests
4. Profit

Maybe.
The question is going to be how each school identifies positive cases after moving in.
Kids will just ignore the symptoms if they’re mild enough and spread the virus as they go about their lives. The school won’t have any idea in those cases.
One easy practice would be for all campus housing to screen each kid for temperature each day.

Depends on the action. To quarantine in their apartment or specified dorm for a couple weeks. Could see that. Some of the profs are older.

Testing prior to admit is the most stupid idea, you can test on Monday, been infected the day before, results come back negative and the student show up Wed/Thur and infect the whole class,,,,,ridiculous

Notre Dame sent self-administration test kits with overnight return shipping to every student. They assigned move in dates and times so only one student in each dorm hallway can move in at a time (to eliminate contact between family and the other students). A negative test is required for move in. It’s all timed so that the test results come back a few days before your move in slot.
They will retest the entire student population in like ten days.
Very expensive and this can only work at a small U With an enclosed campus like ND (fewer than 8,000 students).

Baylor is requiring a negative test before you can move in or start classes.

He’s saying testing negative two weeks before move in date does virtually nothing to prevent a kid from moving in while being positive for the virus.

What about proof of vaccination before moving into a dorm? Or are you strictly talking about all students entering campus?
