Opted in for pet health insurance 4 or 5 years ago.

Was 15$ a month.

The ex-wife had a lab that got a uterus infection.(she should have had her spayed)

With the insurance, the operation was left owning $1150, with a 35% chance of recovery.

Dog was euthanized by vet with yours truly there, because ex couldn't stand to see it.

shite happens. Lab was 11.

should be something that's offered at a smaller premium

I paid $22 a month on my dog and they paid $5400 on a $5500 bill when my dog got cancer and had to have her spleen taken out. I think it's a pretty good deal. Of course I only get the emergency coverage, not the more expensive one that pays for checkups and shite.

30lb,4 legged dog fighter, and he thinks he is a junk yard dog.

Use to cost me $1,000 a vet visit for one cat to clean teeth, shots, knock them out to do the appointment.
Dog, not much better as he getting older and cost ad up quickly.

Pet insurance is something more pet owners really should consider. We pay around $23 a month (less than we usually spend tipping at bars/restaurants) for our 4 year old dog. It has a $1,000 deductible (so it doesn’t cover checkups and little stuff), but it pays 90% of bills up to $30,000. No brainer.

I never really looked into pet insurance, just sort of assuming it would only cover some minor things and not e worth.

My 12 year old dog is on $250/month meds now, and has been for 2 years. I do wonder if insurance would have covered some or most of that.

This isn't insurance but it's very good information most people don't know about.

My girlfriend told me about Carecredit for vet bills years ago. I thought it was only for humans.

LSU takes it and so do many vets. It's saved our butts a few times with a dog that had cancer.
If you spend over certain amounts, you get interest free periods. Not sure exactly but if it's like $500 it's 90 days interest free, $1500 is 6 months and so on.

My gf has used it for countless trips to LSU vet school for our dogs over the last 10 years.

Check it out.

Carecredit for pets.

A lot of pet plans probably work like memberships for cheap access to preventative care, but when expensive bills happen - the vet discounts it? I’d be surprised if the pet “insurance “ plans actually pay the vet much.

I’m curious if a veterinarians here can explain how that works..

Not a vet. Google Embrace. I wouldn’t recommend going with the plan that covers everything, but I do like the high deductible plans.

What kind of meds? Check GoodRx and see if you can get it cheaper at a pharmacy. My vet calls in meds to our local pharmacy. He wanted to charge me $90 a month for meds and it’s $12 at my pharmacy. Could save you a lot of money.

My pets cost me about 250 bucks a year each and have better insurance than I do. $250 deductible and 90/10 coinsurance after that. It covers fricking ACUPUNCTURE and chiropractic treatments.

Ditto. Have one with bad knees. Three surgeries later it’s covered enough to be a win for all future animals for the rest of my life.

I love my cat to death. He slept at the foot of my bed last night and I make the house for him when I leave for work. Open the blinds, pillow on the windown sill, the little shite has it made. All that to say, if he gets cancer he's getting put to sleep once I know he's suffering. He's an animal, I'm not spending $1000 on insurance or any treatment for him.

I paid $300 for him to declawed and neutured. That'll be about it for his vet visits. If he gets sick, he dies.

Then I'll get another kitten in a week or two. Life goes on.

Many vet offices have displays of Pet Insurance available.

Have you taken your dog to a vet or did you even notice what is there?
