Malls are thriving in Dallas as well.

A lot of this is Covid backlash. Kids were locked inside for 2 years. Kids are coming around and starting to leave the house for socializing. It's been a slow return.

Too little too late for Bon Marche and Cortana.

The fact they were replaced by a data center and Amazon hub are telling though.

Amazon will probably open a retail location if they make a comeback. Or an outlet full of return items.
I’m all for a mall opening back up. Especially at Christmas time. Sad what things have become compared to the memories of what it felt like walking through a crowded mall.

Are you talking about the Boise Mall?

A guy literally opened fire in there a few years ago.

La Cantara and Northstar malls in SA are supported in no small part by the wealthy women of Monterey and Northern Mexico.

I don’t think 80s style indoor malls are making a comeback.

What’s popular is the outdoor shopping center anchored by restaurants and such.

were thinned out some but there were some still going strong when I left a few years ago

I liked going to a movie and wandering around afterwards in weather extremes.

Their whole business model is keeping prices down by not having brick & mortar locations

Din Tai Fung loves malls. They may have been a trendsetter.

Depends heavily on the demographics of your area. Eastdale Mall in Montgomery is down to one restaurant in the food court, and one anchor store, JC Penneys, which is half empty at the best of times. The mall is half-filled with mom and pop shops and chains like“City Gear”. The rest of the retail spaces are empty and boarded up.

I think if we dug into the data wed find that malls never really declined in places with overwhelmingly white demographics.

There's a lot of truth to this. There are more stores around Pecanland Mall in Monroe than there are still in the mall.

So a fancy strip mall like Perkins Rowe.

I am sorry, but in the South those places sound terrible in the summer.

Fun fact, Lakeside started as an outside mall and it was closed in to bring in something called air conditioning to make it feel like 72 degrees year round and no more worries about rainy days.

In Birmingham, AL the two malls I grew up going to :

Century Plaza - Demolished and replaced with a Amazon Warehouse.

Eastwood Mall - Demolished and replaced with a Walmart.

There is still the River chase Galleria mall but its just a primate display at this point.

It sucks at one time you had Century Plaza and directly across the street you had Eastwood Mall and Catty corner to those was Toys R Us and service merchandise.

Awesome for a kid in the 1980s-1990s

Other than tshirts I don’t get buying clothes online. I’d assume you’d want to see it, feel it, make sure it fits etc

You just order 5 different dresses/sweaters, whatever from Amazon, try them on and figure out which 1-2 you want that fit. You return the rest to Kohls. This is the way most women shop Amazon for clothes.

So you are still going to a physical store.... other than trying stuff on at home vs a dressing room, I don't see an advantage
