Well I can tell you we decided to go cheap last year figuring they were all the same.
They are not. Dont go cheap.

Historically Napoleon has favored Speed Queen washers & dryers.
That's before he met his Waterloo.
Har.
Good luck.

fwiw I posted this earlier on another washing machine thread..
I've sold washing machines 35 years. I could never recommend a top loader with no agitator. They all had a very difficult time cleaning dirty clothe because they could not create enough turbulence in the water such as an agitator model or a front load model. They also had no water level control and most of my clients wanted to see there clothes covered in water.
I would personally recommend a front load LG or Samsung. There is a Samsung front load on national promotion this week at 499 (thru july 10th).. that's what I would buy with my money and if you are doing a load a day I would suggest the 5-year warranty strongly. Front-load machines in general will save you approximately $150-$200 PER YEAR in energy by using 25-30 less gallons of water per load and they spin out approximately 50% more water then a normal top load so your dryer time is cut considerably and a front load will have approximately 50% more capacity than your old style agitator model. There is also minimal wear and tear on your clothes when using a front load washer compared to the Damage Done to your clothes by an agitator.
The problems people talk about with front-load machines normally are all caused by user error. Just remember to reduce your HE detergent to about 2 tablespoons because you're only diluting it with 10 - 14 gallons of water instead of the 40-45 gallons of water traditional washers use. Also you must leave the door cracked after using otherwise you have a sealed environment which creates the mold field people talk about.
Whatever you can comfortably shut the door on you're good to wash.
The Speed Queen with the mechanical controls (they have new models now with electronic controls) is also great machine but at approximately $850 I don't see the value up against the front loader which just based on the Energy savings will pay for itself..
update 7-7
Buy the matching dryer to your washer...dryers are not complicated..good till they break...
Refrigerators are also not complicated..number 1 problem in appliance industry is icemakers however. I know Napoleon does not recommend GE fridges because of the electronic board failure rate...based on my experience, Frigidaire fridge is only brand I would not own with my money..
Make your buy decision by July 10 as this holiday has the best factory promotions I have seen. Better than Black Friday. Lg and Samsung drive the appliance market now and they have substantial dealer kickbacks during American holidays and the whirlpool, ge, and Frigidaire must react to keep market share...Most dealers will hold your product till you need at sale price.
At the end of the day, all appliances are good till they break and every brand has a service man...
hope this helps

If you want it to work for a really long time buy a Speed Queen.

Don't go 'high end' or 'low end'....find something in the middle; this advice was given to me from a friend that's been in the appliance biz for 40 yrs.

Do yourself a favor and get the Samsung Family Hub fridge. It's expensive but it's a life changer. Google it

I 2nd this. We bought a Samsung in 2009. The ice maker went out but was under warranty. A few months ago, the compressor had to be replaced, $871.00, no warranty.
Repair guy said my 15 year old Sears Kenmore in my garage will last longer than my Samsung.

I like our Samsung washer and dryer, do not like our Bosch washer and dryer

We just bought a GE Cafe set for the kitchen. Fingers crossed

I picked up used Whirlpool, old school, white, washer and dryer, with the manual knobs that go "click" when you turn them.
10 year old machines that I paid $200 for total and in great condition and will last me another 10 years at least.
And cheap to fix if they break.
Just search online for used ones of a traditionally solid brand without bells and whistles.

And we're going to the Sears outlet to get a Whirlpool, Kenmore or Maytag fridge for 30-40% off that has a dent on a side or back that no one will ever see.
Last time I was there I saw a badass $2,200 Maytag selling for $1,300. I just didn't have anywhere to put it at the time so I couldn't buy it.
Had a golf ball sized dent on the side that would be against a wall at my house. Just that made it $900 cheaper
