Went to my local Academy yesterday to buy some ammo and wanted to look at an over and under shotgun. Guy behind the counter asked for my ID. Asked him when did this start? He said they had a guy walkout with a handgun earlier this year. I was not someone who likes to hangout at the firearms counter to fondle guns but it is a bit off putting to be asked for an ID to look at a shotgun.

You gonna get yourself killed over insured merchandise

How much do all of these thefts increase our costs.

Start cutting off fingers, they'll stop.

The flip side of this argument is you're getting paid ten bucks an hour, why would you chase down someone?
Wut!? Getting to taze pieces of shite at work would be a job perk.
I see why more and more shopping is going online. Eliminates this kind of crap pretty easily.

It would be nice if the local/state/federal govs gave these store owners legal protection.
It’s frivolous lawsuits that enabled this. Thieves (the kind you are thinking of) know this. They come in with Covid mask on, take a bunch of shite and dare you to touch them.

“loss control” people
But on the flip side, we were walking in the South Parkway Walmart in Huntsville, and saw a loss prevention associate (plain clothes so we didn't know what he was doing) absolutely RAM a lady's cart with another cart as she was exiting the store. Then he began to scream at her telling her they got her on camera, and she wasn't leaving the store with the merchandise, etc. She was probably in her 30s-40s...she bolted like a scared rabbit. I had never seen anything like that in person.
I thought loss prevention wasn't supposed to have any altercations either, boy was I wrong. I figured it could spark a lawsuit....but hard to tell.

My wife and I witnessed a woman shoplifting at the siegen location. While we were walking in, she was running out of the store with multiple shoe boxes in her arms. Dropping them and picking them up along the way. It was noticeable because the boxes were not in shopping bags. Her getaway driver was half way down the parking lot. Not sure why the driver wouldn't be at the door. We took a pic of the license plate and gave it to the manager who was at the door watching them leave. He took it from us. Don't know what he did with it. It was the usual suspects if you were wondering.

bullshite on that. Employees will 100% go after white people. They won’t touch black people

I remember reading that Academy fired an employee for confronting a thief. Think it was in Louisiana

Most employers will not allow employees to chase after or try and stop a shoplifter. Not worth getting someone hurt or shot over a pair of sneakers. Thieves know this.
This is not anything new. I worked a part time retail job in the mid 90s in college and this was ingrained in us in training.

I posted this a while ago, but I was at Home Depot and finished my self checkout. I was in the fricking parking lot and an employee stopped me. Apparently I forgot to scan a $6 box of wood screws. I went back in and paid for them. I had 10+ items so it was just overlooked. I would bet my left nut that if a usual suspect left with a$500 chainsaw, they would just let him go. But a white dude??? Oh, we screwed

Shoplifting is apparently rampant at the Northside Academy in Lafayette. The manager said slides (sandals) are the most stolen item.
The same crowd that cries that no one wants to open anything on the north side.

The story I tell above was a black female shoplifter and a white loss prevention...so black people aren't always "untouchable"

I recall some jackass stole a gun out of the Academy in Alexandria a few years ago and the employees chased him down a football field away as he tried to hop a fence into the woods.
They were likely all fired

About 10 years ago, I was working up in Columbus, Ohio and talked to a convenience store clerk. He told me he was replacing another guy who had been robbed and hurt once before but had been fired for protecting himself.
The former employee had 3' piece of a broom handle under the counter and when a robber came in, the clerk grabbed his stick and whacked the guy a few times who ran out.
The Po-Po was called and the management was notified. He was fired before his shift ended.
