I would never use a .223 for hunting big game and the reason is the exact opposite of overkill.
5.56 caliber ammunition is used in military applications because of light recoil allowing the shooter to maintain point of aim, not because it causes massive soft tissue damage.

People don't hunt with them because they aren't effective other than maybe a headshot or hit to vital organs. 7.62 is a much more lethal round and no one even cares about it because they just hear and see the ever so scary AR15 and panic.
