Each set of two units could produce about 35 kilowatts per hour of electricity at that flow rate, he said, enough to power 22 Louisiana homes a day. The units are modular and stackable, so 100 or more could be placed in the Mississippi to generate electricity that would be delivered to shore by underwater cables.

22 homes per unit?

and at what cost to get up and running, deliver, and maintain?

I’m all for advances in tech but this is small potatoes

Supposedly has been under research for a decade or so. Thought the project was somewhat recently abandoned.

because when a big log or tree gets stuck in it it takes several days to clear it and then another week minimum to repair the damage.

im sure shell can operate just fine being shut down for half a month every month

You act like there aren't pumps or pump suctions already currently in this service.

It will generate barely enough electricity to power a microwave

Will cause increased siltation, necessitating more dredging to maintain navigability. This will make it untenable from both energy and benefit:cost standpoints.

Turbine is the word you are looking for.

He is correct. A mill does not produce electricity, at least not primarily. A mill grinds food such as corn.

I was told by a retired Gulf States/Entergy exec that they tried and failed at this in the 80's. The amount of debris and sediment in the river around Baton Rouge was constantly clogging and damaging the system.

I'm against it. Burning fossil fuels is the American way to make electricity - everything else is communism.

That seems really low. But maybe this is new tech and needs to develop. I know jack shite about hydro.

Not a good option as you get further down river.

The maintenance on them would be a nightmare: silt, flotsam, trash, etc would be a constant problem.
