I can’t speak to the pay or benefits, but I can tell you without a doubt that the culture is better at Shell.

What line of work are you looking at? Operations, maintenance, salaried staff? I've worked for both, at the respective sites you mentioned. Both are good companies. More opportunities to move into different roles at Shell. I'm at Shell now and I don't regret leaving Valero, but I do miss the people there. You really can't go wrong either way.

Probably Shell Norco. Everyone I know who works for shell is getting top pay for their position. WHat type of work are you doing?

I know several people who worked for Valero who had the location they worked at sold and their benefits effectively evaporated without much notice. That could be an isolated event. Shell Norco looks like it'll be there and part of Shell for a long time to come.

No retirement plan is really a guaranty until you are using it. Shell's looks pretty good based on the people who I've talked to. Not really sure about Vallero.

Overall culture is really only a concept, middle management morphs it into whatever they want it to be within certain constraints. The location really dictates the culture you work in day to day, so if you know people at either site you're considering, they would be the best folks to ask. I don't have any insight into Norco and I don't currently know anyone at a Valero location (people I knew worked at a former Vallero location).

I ssume the choice is between the Shell Norco facility and the Valero St Charles Refinery. Location is not a determining factor if that is the case, I think they're about 2 miles apart?

Personally, I'd probably go Shell since they're a larger, fairly stable company with a history of very good pay and benefits by my recollection. Ultimately, If I didn't know anyone there, I'd probably determine by the overall compensation package plus the impression I got from the interviews if my future boss was part of the interview process.

Good luck future baw.

Shell wants to get rid of all their refineries and norco doesn't make any money.

Plus you have to work for the Dutch.

Valero all the way.

Been hearing that for years. Just a few years ago they bought out (however you wanna word it) Saudi Aramco's portion of the Convent and Norco refining operations. Now, they are wholly owned Shell refineries.

They're about 200 feet apart. And go with Valero, Shell is full of union assholes.
