His body will be wrecked by the time he's forty and you'll be working 40 hour weeks or less for similar pay. Maybe then he'll quit being trashy.

Operators starting pay working 40 hrs/week is not even close to 6 figures. Sure they can work 3 turnarounds a year and make much more but who the hell wants to work 7 12's for 3 months at any time of the year. I work 40 hrs/week max and make a comfortable living. I grew up with a plant worker dad who is retired now and he tells me that if he could do it all over again he would take a staff job earlier in his career he missed so much with me and my 2 brothers working shift work.

Yep. My dad just got off of working 70 straight nights for his turnaround. Dad's an operator. Pawpaw was an operator. All of his grandsons are engineers including myself as a ChE. There is a reason for that.

FWIW, I clear about the same as an operator with 300 - 400 hrs of overtime and for the most part put in 40 hrs a week, with an occasional weekend worked. Been out of school less than 10 yrs.

I'd take an operators job w/ Shells any day. Yes there are morons but idk if the good ppl of the OT realize how great these jobs are.

Of course not. You have snotty noses on the OT that spew stuff that their Prius driving buddy told them, but really don't realize the type of individual that a company likes Shell hires and the compensation package given to said individual.

Bottom line is...you don't have to work gobs of OT to make great money (despite what is perpetuated on the OT), and the benefits are hard to beat.

My wife's uncle is a commercial shipping boat captain. He makes 6 figures and you would never tell. Humble as can be. All with an 8th grade education.

Sounds like OP has shitty friends. I dropped my childhood friends like a bad habit when they all become stoners working at liqueur stores all while trying to get into the rap game.

There are two sides of every story.

I work in the O&G sphere (not an operator), and while my particular area is shielded from the downturn, I wouldn't be spouting off about money considering the current climate is still trending downwards.

ETA: I wouldn't be spouting off about money ever anyway though.

The doucheyest guy I know once announced to people at a gathering that he made $270k a year working at a chemical plant in his first year after graduating in construction management.

I was with some AA's that are from the hood and they were like "wtf this is why I hate white people, they only pay me $40k."

Should have asked him what his $/hr came out to.

Most of those guys telling everyone what they make are full of shite. I know a guy who tells everyone he makes $100,000 a year as an operator. He's a first year loader with no prior experience at a small plant. He is lying. So are most of the other young people who make those kind of claims. They buy expensive stuff and announce their "income" and brag about having a 6th grade education making more money than the college grads while working less and sleeping in the control room when they are there.

They're in debt up to their arse hole, coving every second of overtime possible to make enough to pay the bills, and not making as much as they say.

Making 6 figures is great, but what they do with that 6 figure income is really all that matters. A small education might help them learn to properly invest that six figure income. Granted, that education doesnt have to be through a traditional avenue like a university, but it wouldnt hurt to be more intelligent either.

they sit in a chair for 10 hours/day talking about LSU and Hunting, and then maybe for 2 hours they either walk their unit checking gauges, visually inspecting pumps, or signing off on some contractors work permit(contractors=the people who actually WORK at the plant).

and they all look BoredAF. spent a couple months one summer at exxon.

I don't care what position one has or how much education, brag about your income and you are sure to hit a wall. It may take 20 years but rest assured it will happen.

How's that?

Curious as to what you think operators do in the plant

Plant operators tend to have a pretty structured pay system so it's not really a big secret at the plant to know how much each other makes

Them talking about it outside of work is just an effect of that environment

BTW - After 20 years offshore I'm doing plant work now since the offshore crash. The pay is way less, I work more now than ever before and the work is painfully boring. I pretty much hate my life right now! Tell your friend to stick that in his pipe and smoke it.
