Shell PLC and Chevron Corp. have put onstream the deepwater Whale field on the United States side of the Gulf of Mexico (soon to be Gulf of America), expecting a peak production of 100,000 gross barrels of oil equivalent a day (boed).
British energy giant Shell operates the development with a 60 percent stake through Shell Offshore Inc. Its U.S. partner Chevron owns 40 percent through Chevron USA Inc.
Located in the Alaminos Canyon Block 773, Whale will have a semi-submersible production host in over 8,600 feet of water. Up to 15 wells will be tied back to the host via subsea infrastructure, according to the owners.

The 7.5 years it took for Whale to achieve first oil from discovery included a year of delay in reaching a final investment decision “following our cash preservation strategy during the COVID pandemic”, Shell said.
“This deepwater development enhances our leading Gulf of Mexico (soon to be Gulf of America) portfolio, where our oil production has among the lowest GHG intensity in the world”, compared to other members of the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers, it said.
Discovered 2017, Whale holds estimated proven and probable reserves of 480 million boe. Its production facility is adjacent to the Silvertip field, also owned by Shell and Chevron, and lies about 10 miles from Shell and Chevron’s Perdido spar platform.
quote:
Bruce Niemeyer, Chevron president for exploration and production in the Americas, said separately, “Production from Whale brings Chevron another step closer to reaching 300,000 net barrels of oil equivalent per day in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico by 2026”.

Chicken needs to add pump jack and offshore platform emoticons for us to choose from.

Maybe not on your maps.
But will be renamed in our hearts.

Shell has gotten to where this platform and the few before it are almost identical and don’t need near the offshore number of people to operate them. This means they are very profitable.

Good to see Shell start to do like Exxon and Chevron and give the middle finger to these activist investors who try to poison investment in oil & gas.

Guess Trump will sell some overpriced maps to his followers with it renamed.

That’s not 100% true. They do this to save money and the platforms are not fully built when they arrive in the field. Most of the engineering is complete and they are all cookie cutter. They have what the need for first oil and then add more equipment as needed. You still need the same number of POB to run the platform. They are mainly saving on engineering cost.

No doubt. People forget Trump floated the Greenland idea in his first term. The Trump campaign or the GOP had a shirt like this for sale I think

The U.S. tried to buy Greenland in 1946, so while I think Trump does say some dumb shite from time to time, that's actually not a new things. There is actually a good strategic case to make for acquiring it, both military/defense and natural resources.
From what could be a potential future natural resources boom in geothermal and lithium brine mining, I'd think Denmark would be dumb to sell. But we also know Denmark is never going to be able to beef up military to counter Russia, so if the price is right from the U.S., and defense-wise it helps ensure some protection for the Scandinavian countries, they might very well agree to it.

The Amtrak departing DC around noon on the 20th can’t get here fast enough.

This.
Perdido is an engineering marvel.

Investment resource extraction is good.
However, the GoM operators are also giving the middle finger to U.S. citizens by offshoring the jobs related to that extraction. At current prices, GoM oil is relatively more profitable because of the royalty rate in the U.S.
The royalty rate should be increased to offset the number of formerly U.S. based jobs now sitting in Poland, India and Malaysia.
