Glad you posted this. My BJJ instructor also trains heavily in JKD. I am lukewarm to it as a fighting style since my background is boxing and tend to always give a stand-up edge to a good boxer. However, Bruce Lee was a freak. He was very fast with his hands and feet. He would probably win in a straight up street fight but if Tyson caught him clean, God help the man.

Yea and I am sure the 44 professional fighters Tyson defeated by KO will say he was no slouch in punching mechanics.

You can argue all day long but you'll still be wrong. Size does not equal strength. Proper mechanics go a LONG way.

Where is kbeezy when you need him?

yea i meant hand speed, sorry.

I bet you loved watching "Hong Kong Phooey" as a kid!!! Lol...
Tyson was a professional boxer who could hit like a mule. Lee did one finger push ups...

that being said, I'm not questioning Tyson's mechanics or punching power. I think he's putting out more pounds/sq inch than lee

I give you a choice to get punched in the face by Mike Tyson or Bruce Lee. Who are you taking?

Like Tyson didn't have good punching mechanics? lawlz?

I'm not saying that at all. I would just like to see the dude in a real fight.

IDGAF who Bruce Lee trained. IDGAF about his neato demonstrations. I want to see him kick somebody's arse.

We've all heard a million stories about how bad arse Bruce Lee was. I want to see that shite.

This statement shows how little about Bruce Lee you know.

Still not seeing the irony.

Can you link to Bruce Lee training Ali? I'm not seeing that anywhere.

No one is saying that. He definitely knows martial arts.
quote:

2. The thread is specifically about Lee versus a boxer
And saying that Lee trained Ali doesn't mean Bruce Lee beats Ali or Tyson.

stand-up edge

I don't think Tyson has to just stand up. Apparently no one thinks Tyson could even get close enough to touch Lee with his pinky. If Tyson grabs the dude, it's over.

Tyson caught him clean

If Tyson caught Lee clean with no gloves on, not only would the fight be over, but so would Lee's life.

Typical lazy oversimplification of what I said so you can feel you scored a point. Congrats on arguing with yourself.

"Learned from" shows a respect for knowledge and authority on a subject. That's my point. Lee was a respected fighter by world champions. That says something.

Get outa here with that lazy straw man nonsense.

I'm saying Tyson also had great punching mechanics to go with his natural power, dummy.

People forget how fast Tyson was for such a big guy. Eveyone ever only thinks of his power when he was actually very fast too.

He was like a wound up spring ready to pop at any moment

Tyson was very fast, especially for his size. But he was not Bruce Lee fast.

Bruce was almost impossibly fast and amazingly strong for his size. He wouldn't have the 1hit knockout punch Tyson had but he doesn't need it. Lee had a size/strength combo that was unparalleled.

Ali was also about being a media whore before they existed in the sports world. Part of his training with Lee was hyperbole for this very reason. I'm not saying he didn't learn anything from Lee but it still doesn't make anyone's avi "ironic" as you put it earlier.
