No. They are upset because Aunt Jemima is depicted as a mammy. Mammies were considered to be subservient.

And Betty Crocker was created in the 20s by an all-male staff at Washburn-Crosby when women were considered to be subservient and directly associated with keeping our asses in the kitchen.

Get over it.

Just because you are okay with white women being depicted subserviently doesn't mean that everyone else has to be okay with it or any other symbol that comes off as offensive.

As someone that has had many of gallons of Aunt Jemima poured on my head, this disappoints me greatly.

Or I'm ok with the fact that the image has evolved with the times and is no longer considered subservient but more so an authoritative image of the ability to cook.

Don't bitch about it's removal. Own that shite.

The couple has more personal reasons for launching the petition now. B. Smith was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2013 and is unable to lead the charge on her own. And while the couple’s plans for their own grocery chain didn’t work out, their hopes to change the Aunt Jemima brand still can.

Gasby’s petition isn’t calling for the liquidation of the company. But he does want the name and mascot eliminated and also suggests PepsiCo consider changing the brand name to that of his wife. Not only is she a well known and widely respected black female entrepreneur, but a portion of sales could be donated to the causes of women’s health and brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

“You could say to me, ‘Well, I’m doing it for financial reasons—no,” Gasby said. “If not now, when? [And] who better than B. Smith?”

Stop trying to make people feel a certain way because you feel they should. Just because you don't consider it to be a symbol of subservience doesn't mean that it isn't for someone else. You don't have to use an image that depicted black woman as being less than to get the point across that she can cook. Does Sunny Anderson dress like a mammy or dance a jig in kitchen to prove that she cook?

Funny, isn't that exactly what the people in the OP are doing?

I mean they stopped black people in the store to try to guilt their asses over buying Aunt Jemima, who has evolved into a pretty PC version of it's original racist origin.

The people calling this out legitimately want Aunt Jemima replaced with their own image. They don't think it's a bit more subservient than most people these days who continue to buy the product, of all races. The only reason they're even bringing this up now is for their own financial gain.

So lets just get rid of images all together since someone, somewhere will be offended by it.

Those losers have way too much time on their hands.

I wonder if they ever thought of putting it to good use and say, help out at food pantry, old folks home?

She was and for some people the name reverts back to those images of her as a mammy.

OK, but she isn't any longer. In fact, it's been quite a few years

I think this issue would have more legs for you if Ms. Smith wasn't pushing to have AJ replaced with her own image. This reeks of a manufactured crisis.

I agree

Those people are self serving hacks to be honest.

no, not all. Some images are legitimately offensive. The current image of Aunt Jemima isn't particularly offensive, but the name has been tied to some very offensive imagery.
