i have noticed this a lot more the last few years, especially with cashiers.
A cashier's job is pretty boring, really. I did it in college. I know.
Most of the time when a cashier strikes a short conversation with you, it's to break the monotony. They're just trying to get through their day.
As for Trader Joe's employees, they're obviously trained to converse with you, either to upsell or get customer feedback on things.

I was a cashier in high school. I know the deal.
I think asking questions like "do you have any plans this weekend?" Is awkward and unprofessional. You can be polite and break up the monotony without being a creep.

It's called customer service. Most people enjoy this type of interaction. With the exception of a few homosexuals, such as yourself, who are so miserable you don't want friendly service industry workers at a place of business.

Conversely, this cashier is probably on Facebook right now posting about the miserable fricks he has to deal with.

I work as a bank teller, and I was helping a woman with a transaction that was really difficult to focus on.
To my left, one of my coworkers (We'll call her Debbie) was attempting to help a man who wanted to do a cash advance on a debit card. The man was tall, African American, and had a foreign accent, so he was definitely not from the area
Upon asking for his ID, Debbie looks at it confused. She says "Sir we only take valid United States IDs."
"That is a valid ID."
His ID was from the District of Columbia.
Debbie calls our supervisor over and this is where it got bad. Our supervisor insisted that "Columbia isn't in the US. This is a Columbian ID." The man started to raise his voice and it eventually became something that everyone in the bank could hear.
"WASHINGTON D. C. - D. C. - Pull out your ID book. I know you have one, and I guarantee you it'll be in there."
Our supervisor pulls out the ID book and TURNS TO THE STATE OF WASHINGTON to look for a valid ID. He grabs the book and flips to the right page where, alas, District of Columbia is right there as a valid US ID card.
"But it says Columbia."
"DISTRICT. OF." The dude said over and over.
She eventually, reluctantly, let him do his cash advance and he left angrily.
I asked her afterwards if she finished 6th grade.

People complain about the dumbest stuff. I like shopping at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods even though it's more expensive bc the workers are actually helpful and generally give a shite.
me too, give me the shopping experience at Trader joes over a regular grocery chain. frick most of the grocery store employees around here are retarded, even checkers. I advocate giving them jobs, but checking out is unpleasant.

The only time I object to it is when people shite on their company or other customers in some attempt to buddy up to us.
I mean, I get it, and I don't get mad because you make an offhand comment about your place of employment, but that's legit unprofessional.
Back in the day, every Uber driver I talked to bragged about Uber. Now, half of them will openly shite on Uber and talk about how Lyft is more fair to drivers. It's annoying.

. there is very little professionalism. they often crack jokes, use very informal language, etc
Surely they didn't have the nerve to make eye contact

I think you should be more open to it... judging from what I see here, they are probably the only people who want to be your friend.

That seems odd. Couldn't they just sign up to work for Lyft?

To the OP: you sniveling uppity pretentious piece of shite.
Some of those cashiers might be at the pinnacle of their potential... and that's fine, it does not make them any less of a person than you, you little turd.
Just remember, SOME of those cashiers are are young folks who are working their way through school and will soon be making more money than you.

I wouldn't have guessed calling for old-school, professional customer service would trigger so many people.

Maybe you should stay home and waller in self pity.
