Service dogs?

What are the laws pertaining to them and to what length do the owners have to go to identifying them as such?
I just witnessed a situation between a customer in a store with "service dog" and a store manager. Guy walks in the dog in a leash and on the leash it said service animal. Dog didn't have vest on or anything else. Manager simply and calmly asked the customer if that was service and he told her yes and that is the only question you can ask me and he got very defensive and confrontational. Stating that he was protected by federal law. I would think that you would also have to carry some other form of identification that would prove the animal is such but I don't know.

They’re supposed to have a vest. This whole service animal thing is out of control. I get that they are very useful and needed for people that are blind, dealing with PTSD and that sort of thing, but come on.

The person only has to answer that it’s a service dog and that they’re disabled in some way.

Friend of mine I was with yesterday, her brother and his fiance live in NYC. Well, she wanted to take her very oversized dog everywhere with her so she feigned the need for a service dog and voila - now she can take that dirty mutt anywhere.

True service animals are licensed and the owner is required to carry the paperwork at all times. So, he can take his "that is the only question you can ask me" bullshite and walk.

There's been a big uptick on service animals; just look at the animals people bring on planes. It's a big scam and it's another way for people to say "hey look at me". It takes away from those that actually need one like combat vets.

You can ask if it is a service dog and what tasks the dog is trained to perform. They don't have to produce paperwork.

This bothers you?
Not all but it sure raised a red flag when the guy got so defensive and responded how he did from one simple question. In my experience of 50 years on this earth when someone acts like that from a simple straight forward question then something isn't right.

An official service dog has registration papers and a vest

They’re supposed to have a vest.
quote:completely disagree. We bread dogs to be of service to us. Dogs and humans have a special relationship and if they help us out then that's a good thing.
This whole service animal thing is out of control.
Perhaps you are annoyed with the "emotional support" animals. Those are completely different than service animals

Being a certified service dog is like being a minister. Go online and pay a few bucks and you can get your certification overnight.

Seems like this is the only requirement these days.

That doesn't seem right, they at least should be required to carry a card or something on that dog that certifies it as a service animal. Not just a simple vest or leash that anyone can buy off of amazon. Not saying you are wrong but if so that law is fricked up.

You're not allowed to ask any questions. We had a person come in with a service horse not long ago. Couldn't ask a damn thing. It did have a vest on, though, fwiw.

That’s correct.
And you don’t have to produce the paperwork, anyway.
The business can only ask those specific questions.

You can look it up. It’s under the Americans With Disabilities Act.

I've thought about getting my hunting dog certified. I'd like to fly north to hunt birds but I can't trust the current system for transporting my dog when I've invested so much time and money (in that order) into him.

Aren't there 2 types? Service Animal and Emotional Support Animal
My understanding (and im probably wrong - correct me if so) is that a Service animal is protected by the ADA and can go anywhere but an emotional support animal is not.
