The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would make Juneteenth, or June 19th, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
The bill would lead to Juneteenth becoming the 12th federal holiday. It is expected to easily pass the House, which would send it to President Joe Biden for his signature.
quote:
The Senate passed the bill under a unanimous consent agreement that expedites the process for considering legislation. It takes just one senator’s objection to block such agreements.

Why would they make this a federal holiday and not the ratification of the 13th? There were still slaves right up until the 13th was ratified.

Now do the day after the super bowl.

Honoring Juneteenth by not working is the definition of irony.

No problem here. Nice reminder that slavery ended here in America, looking at you China

The following Federal holidays are established by law (5 U.S.C. 6103):
New Year's Day (January 1).
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (Third Monday in January).
Washington's Birthday (Third Monday in February).
Memorial Day (Last Monday in May).
Independence Day (July 4).
Labor Day (First Monday in September).
Columbus Day (Second Monday in October).
Veterans Day (November 11).
Thanksgiving Day (Fourth Thursday in November).
Christmas Day (December 25).
I guess Juneteenth is about as worthy as Columbus Day
I'm for it... Nice weather to have a free day off

Then a bunch of people who already know what Juneteenth is would have to go look up what the 13th amendment did.

I think celebrating the end of slavery in the US is definitely worth celebrating, certainly more so than President’s Day. He’s simply a civil servant not worthy of a holiday. So rescind President’s Day as a federal holiday, replace it with Juneteenth, and also add Election Day as a biannual holiday.

I don't care whether its a holiday or not, but can we please not officially call it "Juneteenth", and chose a name that doesn't butcher the English language?

I don't even care what you post, I just wish I knew who that was in your avatar

This is retarded; Juneteenth is a Texas, and specifically Galveston event. This was not a national event and does not need to be a federal holiday.
More woke signaling by the Congress that will make no material improvement to people's lives.

No way my work acknowledges it with a day off, so idc.

It should only be allowed to be a holiday once they get rid of that completely stupid name "Juneteenth"

Then you would destroy its “authenticity”. It’s harmless.
