I went through this in 2021-2022. 3 friends committed suicide in about 18 months. Really sad situationmfor everyone. I'm sorry for your losses, TDTOm

We don't do enough to combat the mental health issues in this country
What do you recommend? A huge percentage of these so called issues are GENERATED by people trying to "combat" them.
You say we don't do enough. Ok. What else needs to be done? Be specific.

33 here.
Been to some pretty bottom of the barrel places mentally as a young father and young husband in my mid-20's. Grateful for those times now and the perspective it gave me, but I wouldn't want to go back and I feel for anyone there now.
23-29 is a tough age. You're trying to figure out what you want to do all while the world is telling you what that should be. Making it, whatever that even means, still feels so far away and it's hard to realize in that moment that the process is actually the making it. If you have a family or a spouse, it can be even more so challenging.
The thing I see that I believe attributes most to the feeling of loneliness is a lack of community. There are so few outlets, especially post COVID, where community is the center of an event, especially for young people. And I don't mean go hang out at a church or volunteering, though those are viable options, I mean just hanging out with your peers.
When you create an outlet for community and to bring people together the right way, it's the days people remember the most and their favorite days of the year.

I agree with every word you've said here.
and if i may indulge myself as someone who is a little older than you (but not a lot older than you), it sounds like you're doing well and figuring it out and for that i salute you. keep it up. you sound much more mature and on top of your shite than i was at 33.

I stress to mine every time I see them “don’t take any pills or powders or whatever” and “failure of any kind isn’t the end. Your life is just starting, no matter what happens, you have options that lead to a happy successful life”.
Spot on. My son is about to be 14, and is just starting to see some challenges at school. Up to that point he never even had to put any effort, and got straight A's. This year to start, there was a Math concept that he did not understand, and he was afraid to ask anyone for help because he had never been in that position. He ended up hiding it for awhile and once we got his progress report, we had a long talk with him about how it's not the end of the world, and that if he asks for help he will get it. He's already pulled it back up, and is back on the right track.
I worry about it constantly. He's like me when I was younger, where if I ran into any adversity I would just shut down mentally. It took me a long time to get out of that pattern of thinking; I feel like he will have the same struggles.

That’s an extraordinary number - 6.5% of your class died in five years in car wrecks alone?
In Louisiana?

For us “Boomers” it is so saf how far our Country has slid in zero respect foe Life and Property.
I tell the young ones on my family if they experienced one week on the 50s and 60s they would not “ come back to present day”.

Ive never met anyone who has committed suicide.
Met a couple of murderers but never anyone that ended up killing themselves willingly. I know many alcohol and drug addicts that have passed the last decade, but I take those in stride now

This is somewhat BS because you have optics on everything now.
Back in 50' 60's things werent all that better, they were just hidden and we are finding the skeletons now.

This is what I was leaning towards, every teen with a TikTok account claims to have PTSD and severe anxiety (yes this is a broad generalization) with both being self-diagnosed leading them to using it as an excuse at every obstacle thus allowing it to define themselves.
Any therapist worth a shite isn’t diagnosing a kid with anything because they saw it on TikTok.
If anything, the therapist I work with HATE TikTok for this very reason.

My Drivers Ed class was taught by my basketball coach and basically consisted of me taking groceries to his house and dropping off his dry cleaning. He would set his coffee cup on the dashboard and read the sports page while we drove and dare us to hit a pothole. His daughter was hot and nice but they were huge UK fans, so that was a no for me.

2 words. Social. Media.
Even if you’re not into politics or online dating, etc it’s still harmful.
But I’ll add to those 2 words… staring at screens all day, which is what young people have done since birth is scientifically proven to cause a constant sense of anxiety at the least. Depression can easily follow that.

It’s 100% adderall and the ADHD drugs that makes them anxious. It’s a known side effect
Not to mention all the energy drinks that teenagers seem to think it is ok to drink. As a 40 ur old man, those give me the shakes and makes me anxious. They pump their bodies with poison, of course there will be side effects.
