Any therapist worth a shite isn’t diagnosing a kid with anything because they saw it on TikTok.

If anything, the therapist I work with HATE TikTok for this very reason.

agreed, but the problem is that there are a frickton of therapists out there who arent worth a shite.

I am in my 50s and a graduating class of 200 lost 13 in 5 years just to car wrecks

I graduated from high school in 1983 in metro Atlanta. Our county had 10 high schools with about 1000 students each. From January to May of 1983 18 kids in that county killed themselves. 7 different schools. It was almost a fad. It was a damned shame.

I stress to mine every time I see them “don’t take any pills or powders or whatever”

My son is 25. He called me a few weeks ago with a bad hangover. Went out with some friend to celebrate a birthday. He mentioned 2 of them leaving the bar they were at "to find some coke". His saying this sent cold chills down my spine. He has never done much of anything more than smoke some pot, and not much of that, he is too tight with a dollar. Still, hearing him say that some of the group were going "to find some coke" spooked me....who knows what even the most level headed young adult will do if partying and opportunity presents itself. I asked him about it and he said he didn't like coke....I know he has done some in the past and he has told me he did not like it....I have done it, I didn't care for it either, but just thinking about him doing a little out of boredom and peer pressure sent cold chills down my spine. We talked about, he assured me he wasn't going to do coke again because it is too expensive, he did not like it, and, best of all, he said you never know what your are actually inhaling. It really is scary.

I lost my grandfather at 12 and one of my best friends at 14. There's really nothing that can prepare young people to deal with losses like that.

College might be dangerous to their mental health as well. Military

The Military isn’t exactly known for reducing suicide rates in its alumni.

You see people having the RIP with dates on back of their cars/trucks and I look at how many are so young. Crazy. I don't remember a lot of people in their teens and 20s dying when I was young. It made headlines when it did happen bc it was much more rare.

this problem is about a million times more complex and nuanced than most people think or understand, and you're most likely way out of your depth commenting on this.

I imagine so.

Still, it’s a well known problem and suggesting military service to combat youth death is a pretty wild idea.

maybe, maybe not

there are virtually unlimited resources for veterans seeking help, specifically regarding suicide. way more than what is available to John Q Public. the problem isnt their service (at least not in the way you think it is), the problem is the culture that the re-enter upon leaving the military (and the way that that culture has influenced the military itself)

While I agree with how the movie predicts (in some ways quite hilariously accurate) the general downward trajectory of society, it fails to account for an important variable.

At some point, the capable and courageous will stand up and speak out (we're already seeing it). While they may get ignored in the beginning (which we're also already seeing), there will come a tipping point when the younger generations take a look at the two competing worldviews and realize which one is truly better for their future.

Good example: four-year college education. It's a ponzi scheme waiting to collapse at this point. It is only a matter of time before younger generations truly realize that a four-year degree doesn't automatically equate with knowledge, high-paying jobs, etc. and that it is a huge waste of time & money for many young adults.

Now that's not to say that hard times aren't coming. They will come and they will be a necessary catalyst for this critical realization to occur. But the notion that we're just going to continue a blind descent ad infinitum into dumbassery is too simplistic. Makes for a great movie though

I hope you're right, but we've fallen so far in such a short time, i don't see many ways to crawl out of the spiral. Add to that the numbers of migrants and unproductive among us will continue to grow. They likely already outnumber those of us with common sense who want to work hard and be left alone, eventually their numbers will be so great there'll be no way to keep the train on the track. We are in the waining days of a once great civilization, and so many fail to see it. Every civilization has fallen, ours will be no different.

We unfortunately are friends with three different couples that have lost their sons in their early twenties. Really sad.

All of the efforts to improve "mental health" are seemingly making the situation worse.

The root cause of the explosion of mental illness the past few decades is that modern society has created the inescapable feeling like life is hopeless and meaningless

People need to feel like their lives have meaning and purpose.

God, family, country. They have given people a reason to live for all of recorded human history.

Modern society has aggressively and purposely tried to destroyall 3 of those institutions.

Almost like replacing male figures in young men’s lives telling them to suck it up, deal with it, and keep moving forward with women counselors and therapists that engage in historically feminine methods of dealing with problems is not good for young men.

Sometimes your feelings don’t matter, what you think is fair doesn’t matter, and you just need to suck it up, get over it, and keep charging ahead.

It’s not fun, it’s not fair or just, but sometimes you just have to do it.
