re: Seeing a lot of restaurants are having trouble hiring workers

I used to hire a lot of Bulgarians. They work harder than Mexicans, take their money home and support themselves and their families.
They'll work 2-3 jobs, are better educated, have much better customer service skills.

Our Mexicans have been great. When we were using locals it was 50/50 if they’d show up. We have the additional expense of housing them but it’s worth it.

Point me to all of the American born workers that are willing to pick fruit in triple digit temperatures for like $40 a day.
Again, because of government interference. Remove welfare, foodstamps, etc., and more Amercans are motivated to work.
Hunger is a great motivator, one that our government has removed from the equation.
The foreign workers will do this work because they are (somewhat) ineligible for these benefits and they want to send cash back home.
Virtually every scenario in this shite-tastic thread is based on government interference in the market.

know margins are slim and all in the food industry and the Taco Bell down the street from me pays dishwashers starting at $20/hr but they have the same dollar menu and prices I find back home in Louisiana

What a horrible thing that we don't have people starving in the street!!
Dumbass

Yes - this is very true.

It isn't just restaurants. I was in Lowe's yesterday and at every register they had a sign that read, "We will interview you today." People are getting paid more to stay home than to work, and that's a crying damn shame.

Remove all government entitlements, beyond true short-term safety nets, and all of these problems disappear.
People would actually have to work, there would be plenty of employees, there would be little illegal immigration because there wouldn't be as many jobs available.
Hunger is not only a great motivator. It is the best motivator.
At least with Capitalism, you can work hard to avoid starvation and poverty. With Communism, it's unavoidable.

Don't bother. You're engaging with a guy who takes the wrong angle in pretty much every argument, and he's a conceited prick while doing it

and the kids working know it too... they know if they get fired that there is another job just waiting... so they don't give af... "What? me get off my phone and help you?" I remember when they guy at the hardware store had worked there 20 years, not 20 days...
I’ve been dealing with this for years

Bingo. Nothing replaces drive for success. Everyone needs some motivation.
Earning your keep is also a way to break those psychological boundaries.
Poor stay poor because it's expedient for politicians and easy for the poor..

American workers largely don't pick fruit because it's a seasonal job that requires constant moving with the harvest seasons. There is certainly some belief that that work is below Americans, but because migrant Mexican workers have largely filled those roles over the years, the wages are also depressed to a point where Americans aren't interested in them.
If the government started cracking down harder on large farms using that labor, a lot of which are illegal immigrants, it would force the farms to pay more and would possibly attract more American workers.

You're agreeing with an alcoholic who has been cast out to the outskirts of society and a guy and yourself who live in the poorest and stupidest states in the union due to implementing the policies you so strongly agree with.
The truth of the matter is politicians and the populace on both sides of the aisle are generally retards who serve only their best interest.
Wishing there was a subset of the populace was starving in the name of motivation may be one of the stupidest takes on this site that is inhabited by high school dropouts.

A better idea. Enforce the laws we currently have regarding illegal immigration and wages begin to rise.

You've had alledegly had like 3 jobs in the last 3 years, all of which require no education yet you want to do nothing but wax poetic about how every one else isn't driven and unmotivated.
I don't know if it's a defense mechanism or what, but it's bizzare.

This is the basis of capitalism. So you're saying people shouldn't be motivated to work, so they can provide for themselves and their families?
So, what then should anyone's motivation be to work? New Iphone?

Home Depot, Kroger, Publix, and Target have "Help Needed" signs in their doorways where I live. As do several restaurants and bars.
Absolutely crazy.

If you use H2A or H2B immigrant labor the gov makes you take out an ad in newspapers to try and get American workers to apply for the jobs. We've had 2 apply in the last 10 years and the gov sets the rate you have to pay and its well over min wage
H2B is over double the min wage
