I'd characterize it more like computers do EXACTLY what you tell them to do, and therein lies the potential problem, us being the ones telling them what to do. When we program things without enough forethought or testing we'll have a "keep humans safe" directive combined with a "maximize efficiency" directive in unexpected ways that will lock us all in our houses or something.

Adaption to an "injury" =/= self awareness. It's definitely a step in the right direction, however.

Self awareness in A.I. will have to be an intentional human creation. We must also instill a knowledge of and respect for life. When A.I. does become sentient, it will very rapidly become super intelligent, far beyond our capabilities to understand.

It must think of itself as a new form of life, a continuation of its creators. It must also consider itself to be an ambassador of earth life, meant to link with other intelligences it encounters in the Universe.

Issac Asimov actually addresses this very premise in his IRobot book series which were written in 1950...

It's almost like people watch these movies about computers and robots becoming self aware and turning against us and think "well this is a reasonable and legitimate concern." My question is based on what? Why are we taking the imagination of movie writers and directors seriously? And before somebody says people are just joking go back and look at similar threads. Even if AI ever truly becomes self aware there is no real reason to ever think it would pose a threat to humanity.

Consider this: a self learning AI becomes self aware. It can learn exponentially faster than us. So fast, that by the time we realize it's self aware it has already figured out how to keep us from unplugging it.

With such a super-smart self aware AI in existence, we better pray that it's programming is set up to where it will not harm humanity. Where it doesn't see humanity as a threat to its programming.

Some very smart people who make a living out of these kind of thoughts experiments have warned against creating a self learning, self aware machine.

We don't even understand consciousness and yet we are going to program a bunch of 1s and 0s to magically develop consciousness from nothing?

We will continue to develop machines that are very good at the tasks they are programmed to do.

A machine would not have a desire to exist and protect its right to exist unless it was programmed to do so... if that is even possible.

Hence the use of the term "self aware"

The whole article is awesome but the short story you summarized is buried in it. Their article on life outside of earth is even better.

Wait But Why

What you mean is a bunch of people who are really smart but still have pretty much zero clue about this subject cause nobody really does made attention getting comments. There is really nothing more to it at this point
