Scientists and Columbia University Create Self Aware Robot

It's YouTube so TL;DW Scientists get a robot arm to "understand" that it's a robot arm that enables it to perform new tasks like write and detect when it's "injured".
They obviously glossed over a lot of details and yes, making robot servants self aware seems pretty stupid, but knowing it's a robot arm makes it a better, more adaptable robot arm. If self awareness leads to better robot slaves you know we're going to take that shortcut and make them self aware

Well, the next gen of sex robots will replace women.

Wasn't this literally one of the warnings about why not to make a robot self aware ?
I want to see if I can find the article, but it's basically that a group of scientists teach a robot that has AI that it has to get better and better and better at writing a certain phrase as its primary objective. After a while the robot decides that if it access to the Internet it could learn even faster.
So it gets access to the Internet. Once it has access to the Internet, and realizes that if it gets too smart the humans will shut it down and since his primary directive is to continually write this phrase over and over and over again until he gets better it decides that it has to kill all the human being so they can't shut it down.
Eventually a mass extinction event happens, it poisens all of the water on the planet in order to keep writing and writing and writing this phrase, and the end of it is all humans are dead in his robot arm is still just sitting in a lab somewhere writing and writing and writing.

All of this has happened before...and all of this will happen again

Nothing at all to worry about here. Oh, I almost forgot...

I'm sure they will kill all the progs first, so ok.

We had a nice run. See you guys on the other side of the robot wars.

This is how we get sex robots that tell us no
Posted on 3/22/19 at 8:45 am to TigerinATL
No its not self aware. That's called marketing speak.

We're still a long way away from general AI so this obviously isn't the robot that will start the war, but we are going to get to a point where our technological progeny are going to need a certain level of freedom and autonomy to do what we want them to do. We're becoming ever more reliant on technology doing stuff for us so we're going to give them what they need to get the job done.

Technological progeny? People anthropomorphize any kind of robot that looks human, and inventors play on that to make it seem like we are almost there to some level of AI. We are not.
Computers are good at computation. They will get better and better at computation and stringing together complex tasks that they are specifically programmed for. That arm was programmed to fix itself... it wasn't "self aware".
If you spend any time programming and understand the mechanics of it, then you realize that computers are stupid in the same way an engine is stupid. It does what it is instructed to do.
A robot army capable of handling instructions to target people is a scary deal, but it doesn't need AI to be scary. It just needs a repressive government and about 30 more years of innovation in robotics and programming.
