Dude, I'm 14... smoking and drinking is the only reason I make the effort to open my eyes in the morning.

I refer to a study that I believe holds more weight. They did a profile of it on 60 Minutes.

Living to 90 and Beyond

14,000 people in one community called "Leisure World" in California were polled about their daily activities, diet, and alcohol intake. Neurologists, Cardiologists, etc. have actually moved there to monitor the science experiment.

They track all 14,000+ to this day (the ones surviving at least). That is a lot of data in a controlled environment.

quote:

comparing that data to how it's all turned out has yielded a slew of published findings about behaviors associated with living longer.

quote:

So what's the verdict? No surprise: smokers died earlier than non-smokers.

quote:

People who exercised definitely lived longer than people who didn't exercise. As little as 15 minutes a day on average made a difference. Forty-five was the best. Even three hours didn't beat 45 minutes--

And it didn't all have to be at once. It could be, for example, 15 minutes of walking and then later in the day gardening or something. And it also didn't have to be very intense exercise.

quote:

People who took Vitamin E didn't live any longer than people who didn't take Vitamin E.

They also looked at Vitamin A, C, and calcium...The short answer is none of 'em made a difference.

quote:

Lesley Stahl: What about alcohol?

Claudia Kawas: Oh. Alcohol made a difference. But it may not be what you think...

Claudia Kawas: Moderate alcohol was associated with living longer than individuals who did not consume alcohol.

Lesley Stahl: Wait a minute. Ha-- moderate-- alcohol you live longer?

Claudia Kawas: Yes. Up to two drinks a day led to a 10-15 percent reduced risk of death compared to non-drinkers.

Jane Whistler: Isn't that exciting? And any kind of alcohol seemed to do the trick.

Claudia Kawas: A lot of people like to say it's only red wine. In our hands it didn't seem to matter.

Lesley Stahl: Martinis just as good.

Claudia Kawas: Yeah.

quote:

good news for coffee drinkers. Caffeine intake equivalent to 1-3 cups of coffee a day was better than more, or none.

quote:

being overweight as a young person wasn't good either. But late in life, they found people who were overweight or average weight both outlived people who were underweight.

Claudia Kawas: It's not good to be skinny when you're old.

Also, sex and social interaction are huge to lower chance of dementia and Alzheimers.

I thought that a few years ago but lately have been getting bored with drinking. Been testing out not drinking for a little while and it’s actually been pretty easy. Still go do stuff and have fun but now just don’t have to deal with any hangover.

Those who think a glass of red wine every evening will help keep the heart healthy will be dismayed. The paper published in the Lancet medical journal says five standard 175ml glasses of wine or five pints a week is the upper safe limit – about 100g of alcohol, or 12.5 units in total. More than that raises the risk of stroke, fatal aneurysm (a ruptured artery in the chest), heart failure and death.

“The paper estimates a 40-year-old drinking 4 units a day above the guidelines [the equivalent of drinking three glasses of wine in a night] has roughly two years’ lower life expectancy, which is around a twentieth of their remaining life. This works out at about an hour per day. So it’s as if each unit above guidelines is taking, on average, about 15 minutes of life, about the same as a cigarette.

It's not especially shocking to me that drinking an entire bottle of wine by yourself every single day is not great for you (4 175ml glasses of wine - the one that is allowed per guidelines, plus the 3 "above the guidelines" - gets you 700ml, and a standard bottle is 750).

This whole article was worded in what seems like the least useful way possible.

I guess "Study suggests that you should not drink an entire bottle of wine every single day" is not an exciting headline.

There is no healthy allowance of smokes a day.

Smoking is bad for you, no doubt. And smoking anything has cardivascular effects. COPD too.

But the link between smoking and lung cancer is widely exaggerated. You can have a few cigs and not raise your risk of lung cancer.

Ive seen several studies that say the exact opposite of this one

Obviously daily heavy drinking is bad

But a drink a day significantly decreases risk of stroke, heart attack, diabetes and dementia I believe. Read a JAMA article on it a while back.

17,520 drinks over the daily limit before it costs you a year?

4 drinks a day (3 over the limit) means you trade 1 year of your life for 16 years of drinking (fun). Die at 85 instead of 89.

Now most don't do it this often. Let's say half the time you drink this much. 32 years equals one year. Die at 96 instead of 99.

Sounds like a good trade.

No. It’s more like a person can have one drink everyday, but 2 to 3 drinks per day, then they’ll lose a little less than 2 years off of their life expectancy. Of course that, is an extra drink or two every single day for 38+ years.

And since this was a study of healthy individuals and they excluded non-drinkers and ex-drinkers as well, the implications need to be in interpreted in that context, which is why the title in the OP is a complete misrepresentation.

Well, I was absolutely invincible in my 20's. I say do whatever you feel like doing for the remaining 2 years.

They recommend a weekly limit of 100 grams of alcohol per week; that is about 7.1 drinks per week. The baseline comparison group was the those drinkers who had between 1 and 100 grams per week, and they averaged 56 grams (4 drinks per week).

Since non-drinkers were excluded, it doesn’t really contradict that research.
