Science: drinking is as harmful as smoking

Drinking will shorten your life, according to a major new study that suggests every glass of wine or pint of beer over the daily recommended limit will cut half an hour from the expected lifespan of a 40 year old.
Those who think a glass of red wine every evening will help keep the heart healthy will be dismayed. The paper published in the Lancet medical journal says five standard 175ml glasses of wine or five pints a week is the upper safe limit – about 100g of alcohol, or 12.5 units in total. More than that raises the risk of stroke, fatal aneurysm (a ruptured artery in the chest), heart failure and death.
The risks for a 40-year-old of drinking over the recommended daily limit were comparable to smoking, said one leading scientist. “Above two units a day, the death rates steadily climb,” said David Spiegelhalter, Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at the University of Cambridge.
“The paper estimates a 40-year-old drinking 4 units a day above the guidelines [the equivalent of drinking three glasses of wine in a night] has roughly two years’ lower life expectancy, which is around a twentieth of their remaining life. This works out at about an hour per day. So it’s as if each unit above guidelines is taking, on average, about 15 minutes of life, about the same as a cigarette.

So I get cheated out of 2 years in my 80s?
I'll have another drink.
I'll have another drink.

This is dumb.
ETA: Why is everyone 40 years old in this study? I'm 28. What can I drink?

That's the plan. I'm not paying into retirement for a reason.

No one knows what the hell they’re talking about. This week it’s bad for you. Next week it’ll be vital to your health. Then it’ll be bad again next month.
Moderation is key.
Unless your thing is meth and hookers.

It’s all good, I’ll just wait a year or so until a study comes out reporting that drinking helps extend life span.

Yeah frick that. Living a dry life is no life to live.

According this, I cut 156 days off of my life just from 18 to 20.
..yeah that actually sounds about right.

My grandfather has drank 4-6 beers almost every day of his life since he was old enough to and he's in incredible shape for 88 years old. I've seen the man chug a beer, just recently, faster than anybody I ever met at LSU. He doesn't go overboard, though, and refuses to drink around my grandmother(big time Christian). The chugging was actually because he had a beer at their house while family was over and I heard him walk in the other room to pop the can and chug so my grandmother didn't hear. Our family have a mechanic's shop that he still goes to daily to help out and still is able to do things like change tires, oil, etc. I think this keeps him active and his mind busy which is a big time plus for someone his age. My grandmother fell last year and it basically put her down for months to where she could only really sit down every day. I saw her stamina and mind go down faster in those last few months then it's ever been. Sucks because my grandparents have been together for close to 70 years.
Honestly, I think the massive amount of stress that is alleved from having a couple beers extend life. If stress doesn't take away more years from us all in some way I don't know what does. My grandfather told me to always keep myself busy, good times and bad, and even after retirement. It didn't really hit me until I was older and I see just how impactful his way of life has kept him going.

Gosh I wonder if there were some other variables they failed to account for.

The problem with studies like these is that they depend on subjects to be honest with their self reported consumption.
Many subjects don't remember or don't tell the truth for fear of judgment.
