I believe I am having Sciatica of some sort. I have a numb/burning/non-painful/dull/aggravating pain all down my legs, from my gluts to my heels. Spoke with my dad who has similar issues in the past and said I could have a bulging disc. I am only 29 years old and am relatively good shape. Not overweight at all. Just wanted to ask the OT about treatment options. Chiropractor? Orthopedic surgeon? Physical Therapist?

edit: I woke up one morning and it was there. Did not do any lifting of back strain the previous day.

My mother was complaining of sciatica. She ended up going to a sports medicine doc, got 2 epidural shots in her back and is now pain free.

Pain isn't always originating from where you think it might be.

Look into piriformis trigger points.

I have a fair amount of experience helping fellow lifters with sciatica, and it is often piriformis syndrome.

Basically, get a softball and roll out your glutes, crossing your leg over your knee to access the piriformis.

Youtube will have a ton of releases here.

Here's to hoping it's not a disc

if it is sciatic, chiropractor will not fix it.

my wife struggles with this every few years and it's miserable. she had always gone to the chiro for everything back related and they never seemed to help on this one.

what she did was see a general practitioner and had muscle relaxers and an anti-inflammatory pills prescribed, combined with stretches. she had a shot in the rear once.

i would start there, see what they say and save the money from going straight to a specialist if they can diagnose that.

I had 2 back surgeries when I was 17 for two herniated discs. Was pain free after that for years minus some slight discomfort. Pulled a muscle or something in my back this summer and now it's hurting again especially when I sit down. Good thing is that I don't think it is a disc problem anymore but muscular

I think mine is muscular as well. At least that is what I'm hoping for. I have tried some stretches I saw online and it gives me temporary relief, but always comes back. My FIL has an inversion table, will that be of benefit?

I had the same problem in my left leg/glute. Stretching and yoga cleared it right up.

Read up on piriformis syndrome, bulging disc, and herniated disc.

Go see a sports medicine dr. I went untreated for two years and it was literally the most god awful thing I have ever experienced. ASK for him to get an MRI done, if he says its not a buldging disc or diagnoses with "Chronic Hamstring" (a Dr's made up term for idk wtf is going on) take your MRI to get a second opinion at a pain management specialist, preferably someone that does not like to give out narcotic prescriptions. They will either refer back to a specialist or recommend certain shots (which are miracles in a syringe) along with some PT.

Definitely be proactive in this, attack it face on, it only gets worse over time. If you think your doc believes you're just looking for meds, frick him, find a new one.

In the mean time, take naproxin or ibuprofin. Naproxin works better for me.

This may seem weird, but my wife also has sciatica that comes and goes every few months. This video on massage techniques to help are actually one of the most effective ways of getting rid of the pain for her. If you've got a wife or SO who's willing to massage you, I'd recommend trying it out.

I ignored the Teeter Hang-up infomercials for years. Then my mom bought me one for a gift because I was always complaining about back problems that I couldn't fix for more than a few hours. I was skeptical, but damn, that thing has changed my life.

I don't know anything technical about back issues. I don't know when you should or shouldn't do things. I just know that this device cleared up all of my issues. I hang for about a minute 1 or 2 times a day, and I am good to go.

I went to the doctor for this when I was around 27. It was similar to the symptoms you described. Not a case for surgery because not that bad. Back stretches and don't overdo it working or working out. I also did acupuncture which helped to relieve the discomfort.

Redbull- I'm a senior med student and someone who has dealt with neck issues and worked with sciatica patients. You may need an MRI, although sciatica is sometimes a clinical diagnosis (meaning no tests are necessary). You should probably go see your primary care physician about this to make sure that it is actually sciatica, but if you are sure that it is you can skip that step and just go see a neurosurgeon or an orthopedist. They may prescribe you NSAIDs or gabapentin, or possibly some physical therapy. But really neurosurg or orthopedist specializing in the spine are your two best options.

ETA: PM&R is also a good choice

My Mom complained of similar symptoms and it ended up being a small non-cancerous tumor on a nerve. She does some PT, takes Celebrex, and they're just watching it to make sure it doesn't grow/cause additional issues.

I have been driving a lot more for work everyday. I drive to BR from Lafayette and back. This may be the cause of the Piriformis syndrome?

I woke up with the exact same symptoms about 4 months ago. It took about 2-3 months to pass, I didn't go to a chiropractor or doctor.

edit- my condition only went down the left side of my body. i didnt see a doctor because i am a kaiser member and their protocol for sciatica is physical therapy, pain medicine/anti inflammatories and stretching. The stretching i can and did do on my own, I wasn't interested in medicating myself(there really wasn't any pain, just numbness and tingling) and i knew i wouldn't commit to physical therapy.

the interesting part of the history you gave is that the symptoms go down both legs, that makes your case different than most posting here, go to your PCP

Go to an orthopedic surgeon. Your general doctor will just refer you to them anyway.

The ortho's Physician Assistant will take some x-rays, give you a script, and possibly a shot if you're in intense pain.

He'll send you to a physical therapist who'll do you the most good. Some electro-therapy, some exercises...

If it doesn't get better in a month they'll suggest the MRI. Most people get better in a few weeks.
