That's the solution just add 50 points to the students' test who don't bother to show up. Then give them an easy assignment whenever they do show up, averages out to a passing grade.

I've seen 3rd graders bringing home 3 hours plus of homework in normal times, which is just insane.

Absolutely. I think it's a very valid conversation that teachers could still teach high rigor without assigned 5 different projects to meet one benchmark. IMO this would be the perfect time to push into determining academic success by mastery/benchmarks instead of just straight up grading (which a lot of times ends up busy work).
I just wanted to point out, the teachers are doing that at the request of the parents in a lot of places. They're also trying to take into consideration the amount of screen time kids are experiencing in NTI.
