NEW ORLEANS — A school bus that overturned on Interstate-10 in New Orleans East on Wednesday morning had never been inspected and was driven by an unpermitted driver.
City spokesman Beau Tidwell confirmed the Hammond’s Transportation bus was driven by Chad Rodney, who had applied for a city school bus permit on Sept. 24 and was denied because he had a 2016 conviction for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. By state law, school bus drivers can’t operate within five years of such a conviction, Tidwell said.
Hammond’s also failed to get a large number of its fleet inspected after failing several city inspections. Tidwell confirmed this particular bus, SB-219, had never appeared for its city inspection under new city school bus safety rules.
Fourteen students were on the bus at the time of the crash. Paramedics took nine students to two different hospitals, where one student was listed in "serious condition" but stable.

5 years? It should be permanent.

I don't think you realize how little this job pays.

Mess up one time when you are 20 and some people want it to haunt them for the rest of their lives.

I don’t think you realize that people convicted of possession and intending to distribute cocaine should not have a job that places children in their care.

For forever?
I think 5 years is fair.

Possession isn’t the problem. Intent to distribute is.

How many adults hopped on that bus expecting a quick check to then realize it was school bus and not a city bus

We're talking about driving a school bus full of young kids, not bussing tables

Looks like between 28 grams and 200 grams.
With weed, that isn’t necessarily a huge amount. Coke? That’s a lot.

Im not naive enough to believe everyone who comes in contact with my child is pure as the driven snow.

I don’t expect pure as driven snow but I don’t think 5 years is enough separation to prove a fully rehabilitated lifestyle enough to drive my child. I would be much more comfortable with 10 years removed with no drug related offenses in that time period.

interesting choice of words here

Id have no problem with 10 years either. Perhaps the longer the better.
Just take issue with getting caught with a oz being a life sentence.

School bus drivers are hard to find... no one wants to do it for the wages provided, and people don't want to give the schools more money to increase wages to hire better drivers.

Why? I mean I get child molestation or if they distributed to minors, but what makes this so much worse than other things?
