It had nothing to do with the plane, but it was the first time I had what they now call an "airplane headache". Apparently it's a phenomenon that usually only shows up in certain males around 30+ years old. It's a very intense stabbing pain at the top of the head and shoots down behind the eye; while I've never had an ice pick driven through my skull, that what I imagine it would feel like. Apparently some study in Italy thinks it's due to the way a man's sinus develops and doesn't allow for pressure to regulate correctly. Only happens on descent, not ascent. It fricking sucks, I doubled over and damn near fell into the aisle, I was pouring sweat, and it really freaked out one of my employees that I was travelling with. I thought I'd had an aneurysm rupture at first.

If I take 800 mgs of Motrin about an hour before landing, I'm usually alright now.

Going in to Cincinnati a few years back in one of those small commuter planes in a spectacular storm. Turbulence got so bad the flight attendant got thrown down the aisle and then ended up sitting in the aisle next to me as we descended. She started praying, which alarmed me. Coming down through the clouds all I could think of was those microburst animations from the Discovery Channel airplane disaster shows. We were the last plane down before they closed the airport. We made it to the end of the runway and sat there for a half an hour while the storm rolled through. frick those small planes, man. I hate them.

Turbulence has never really bothered me. Planes are built for it and I think of it as bumps in a road.

You ever driven on a bumpy road with 22,000 feet of thin air underneath you?

Scruffy flew out of Houston when that big storm passed through that resulted in all those floods in Texas. To make matters worse, it was on Spirit Airlines. Worst turbulence. Never want to experience that again. Definitely said a prayer during that flight.

Happened to me at about that age landing in San Fran. Some of the worst pain I have ever had. It lasted about three days before finally going away. I just figured it was a blocked sinus that I couldn't clear.

Got a ride-along for combat landings in a C-130. Never again.

I keep reading about how "affordable" the new Special Light Sport Aircraft are. I find it funny what some folks call affordable.

I love these planes, but I don't call $92K "affordable."

Hit teeth rattling turbulence and then the cabin made a loud whining sound the rest of the flight. Was not fun. Everyone got free drinks

I once took off with full flaps and could figure out why I couldn't climb. I was already preparing to ditch in the lake when I saw the flaps lever and hit it.

Don't know you, and never met you. But I know you are full of shite. Flaps create lift so I surmise that it was this complete load of bullshite that was weighing your aircraft down.

C2 over the Eastern Med. Up, down, sideways, forwards, and backwards. The Crew guy in back laughing his arse off the whole time and yelling, "Sir, you're turning green"

American flight from Dallas to Seattle.

MD80 if I recall correctly.

Final approach into Seattle at night.

Weather: Raining and gusty winds.

Lumps and bumps all the way to the runway.

Main gear hit the tarmac... we rolled for a bit nose starts to come down.... then suddenly we are airborne again...

..right wing dips momentarily...level flight then we land again.

First and only time I've landed twice on the same runway.

Flight crew got a well deserved round of applause.

I haven't experienced that scary of situations. The worst was probably landing at DCA with 40 MPH winds. The turbulence was pretty bad, and several people were throwing up. It was more disgusting, than scary though

Correct. Flaps do create lift and are absolutely necessary for takeoff. However, he said full flaps. Attempting to take off with flaps at full will create heavy drag and be very difficult, if not impossible, to climb to cruising altitude (depending of the type of plane you have).

Stupid question, but are turbulence worse if you are flying west vs east or any particular direction?

It always seems to be worse for me when I fly to Vegas, PHX, or California.

Take Sudafed or some type of decongestant a few hours before flying.

Stuck on tarmac in middle seat for 3 hours. Thought I was going to lose my mind and get handcuffed and hauled out of there.
