What are the “sweeps”?
Sweeping tax money from the unincorporated areas of the parish into the city-parish general fund where it ends up being spent on city services.

The bill to allow the entire parish to vote on the new city died in committee. The bill to send the transitional district creation to the floor if the vote in October is successful passed.
Ooooh sounds like Colomb gonna need some Boudreaux's buttpaste.

Not many. EBRP Public Works perhaps?
The area in question is already paying for parish services (EBRSO), private service (water), or self funded services (St George Fire Dept).

I like how the shitheads, including that peterson broad, thought the threat of STG having to fork over 100mil would kill it, put it to rest. Dude from STG group said, ok, done deal, literally like, need the check today,LOL

Budget sweeps. They have been sweeping dollars from the unincorporated area onto projects in the city of BR for years. Incorporating St. George takes that ability away from them. It's been the prize for both sides of the debate, but the City has all but refused to acknowledge it.

Yeah, they definitely thought they had a silver bullet with the pension issue.

Which tells you whose budget numbers everyone truly believes.

I don't think they realize how shallow a victory that amendment was for them. They tried to use it as a GOTCHA to kill the bill, but the proponents knew it was basically a nothingburger.
My only concern (and naturally none of us have read the amendment) was they way Carter spoke about “the city parish is not responsible for providing any services to the newly created city”. I know in reality that would never come to fruition if the residents of the city are paying parish taxes (which they will be). However, I can see it being used as a disinformation tactic to try and scare people against voting for St George. “If you vote for St George the Parish will no longer provide sewer service, etc.

Meanwhile, the proponents are at the table like:

i think the fact that StG is more educated and has been very involved in this process, they're not going to fall for that

I think you are right. Just something that caught my ear.

They don't want to start breaking laws quite that blatantly.

so how long until they move for a St George school district?
I assume JBE losing would be a major step
do they wait a few years so that EBR settles down and people realize it's not the apocalypse?

It probably depends on the makeup of the state legislature.
The CBC will try and kill it purely out of spite.

I don't think so. He hasn't exactly been eager to hitch his wagon to the New BR Fifedom.

Everyone in the parish pays a two per cent sales tax. If you live inside a city in EBR, those revenues go up the respective city.
However, the two percent collected from unincorporated areas is swept into the general Fund and isn’t dedicated to unincorporated areas.
Now you understand why Broome and Holden are fighting so hard?
