Eric Schmitt-Matzen looks every bit the part of Santa Claus. His 6-foot frame carries 310 pounds, leaving “just enough of a lap for the kids to sit on,” he says with a gentle Kringley chuckle right out of Central Casting.
He’s professionally trained. Custom-tailored in red. Was born on Dec. 6 (that’s Saint Nicholas Day, of course; are you surprised?) Works approximately 80 gigs annually. Wife Sharon plays an authentic Mrs. Claus. His cellphone, with a “Jingle Bells” ringtone, continually counts down the days until Christmas. Even his civilian attire always includes Santa suspenders.
“I’d just gotten home from work that day,” recalled Schmitt-Matzen, 60, a mechanical engineer and president of Packing Seals & Engineering in Jacksboro.
“The telephone rang. It was a nurse I know who works at the hospital. She said there was a very sick 5-year-old boy who wanted to see Santa Claus. “I told her, ‘OK, just let me change into my outfit.’ She said, ‘There isn’t time for that. Your Santa suspenders are good enough. Come right now.’ ”

Apparently his wish wasn't for people to use the search function.

Great story but is that Santa from Germany?

As a parent to an 8 year old step daughter and my son being born any day now this tears my heart out... I pray to God every night that if he lets my son be born healthy I will do everything in my power to raise him correctly, provide what he needs, and to educate him

Thanks for posting.
Cancer is awful. For anyone at any age. For a child and his/her family, it's so tragic.

This may be the saddest thing I've ever read. Poor little boy.

Same here, made the mistake of reading it at work a few hours ago. Had to shut the office door for a bit. It may be the saddest thing I have ever read.

Yeah my kid is home sick. She grabbed my hand and whined the whole time I was leaving this morning. This has me thinking about that hard.

I'm such a hot mess right now.

On the other hand, a great person was there to help this young child transcend from a life of suffering, and did it in a way that was on the child's level and would be the last thing the child remembered in this life.
It's sad the child died. There is no greater grief. On the other hand, the guy gave the child the greatest gift he could hope to offer given the circumstances.
