It is amazing to me that we can identify potential life in the clouds of Venus based on some special picture that revealed a particular gas that comes from bacteria who survive without oxygen. But we can’t figure out how to predict long term weather forecasts on our own planet with any degree of certainty.

Poor forecasting seasons (and no offense to our resident guys like Duke and RDS who are doing the best they can) tend to lead to changes and improvements. I know a couple of NWS guys and they aren't happy either.

It probably takes more researching, more tech, better computing, etc. All of that costs money.

We decided to spend a frickton of government money improving our space program, while also partnering with the private sector. Right now, a lot of hurricane and weather modeling is through the federal government. Is it time that the NWS/NOAA consider maybe a NASA/SpaceX type partnership?

With the dawn of quantum computing coming, I think forecasting will be one of the biggest things changed by it, for the better.

I've said it for years. As soon as they let them start moving the cone (around 1998 if I recall correctly) the forecasting really went downhill. No need to be 100% on your track anymore. Just throw something up and correct it later. It's like moving from pen to pencil.

The NHC hit this out the park. Brownsville, Texas was never in Sally’s cone.

Pride do your inlaws live there or have a vacation home there? Either way I hope they're safe and sound and don't get much damage.

They live there now (have a place they rent in downtown Nola and they are here now for the storm)

There neighborhood is built pretty damn high compared to the bay, so I think they should be ok there(but the house isnt off the ground), but they have a shite ton of old oak trees around their house
