Was in Sabi Sands in 2024 and one day the guide asked if we wanted to do a bit of a walk in the bush. My wife and I jumped at the opportunity. We came up on a huge elephant about 15' from us who bucked up and told us who was boss. Our butts puckered but it was awesome. The guide carried a elephant gun, not a revolver.

Elephant guns are heavy; if you're only planning to use it to make noise, a revolver seems more practical

Elephants are so damn smart and capable of complex emotions. I think I heard their numbers are doing well in the wild or at least trending up. Hope that’s true.

We love elephants, they're so cool. In Thailand, they have these elephants that paint pictures and they're really good haha

Yes, the numbers of elephants are doing well in certain places, not all.

And elephants are amazing creatures. I just wouldn’t put myself in the situation to make that decision because I would hate myself for killing one.

If it came down to me or him and he forced my hand I could get over it. Also a revolver probably wouldn’t kill the elephant but may make him reconsider the attack.

Went on safari in '22 mostly in a truck but we stopped several times to get out. Never walked very far from the truck.

At one point while riding around, the trees started shaking back & forth. The guide knew it was an elephant. Sure enough a giant bull appears on the edge of the trees and steps onto the dirt road in front of us. Ears extended and trunk lifted. The guide, knowing elephants are usually in groups, slammed the truck into reverse and got us away from him. It was barely in time to prevent another elephant from stepping onto the road behind us.

Even the guide was a little rattled. We could have been a headline if we had gotten trapped between the second elephant and the not so happy bull. Was a very memorable experience. Safaris are amazing. Saw everything except cheetah.

An elephant suddenly emerged?? How the hell don't you know that an elephant is near?

They can be hard to see in the bush. And quieter than you think.

Thinking of going next year. Did you see any rhinos?

I have been to Addo and Etosha.
